VLZ has st tape out, st headphone out, and insert send per channel. All can be used for extra outputs. They're all unbalanced however. And don't forget ALT. You could make custom cable, take ins send of your two source channels, bring them back into two other inputs, ALT these inputs, and use the AL...

It's sounds like you are just concerned with red lights. Record the processed drums out to new tracks. Then turn those processed tracks down so they aren't in the red zone. You'll have exactly the same sound, but you won't see red clipping. Or just turn down the master fader. It's the same affect as...

Why don't you use the process you've described? If you want it to sound crazy distorted don't worry about it clipping--they go hand in hand. If that's not the case, it sounds like you may be mixing up the concept of "playback levels" (SPL) and gain within your system. You should A/B the processing i...

Oh crap, Pro Tools 8 only works with Intel macs? This is really starting to aggravate me. Not correct. Up through 8.0.1 works on PowerPC. 8.0.3 is Intel only. The original mBox even works on 8.0.1. This info is all available from Avid: EOSS (End of Software Support) Announcements Compatibility & Up...

Re: Should a Patchbay Attenuate?
I want to split the signal on 8 channels. 8 going to DAW, 8 going to mixer for input monitoring (the mixer imparts a good bit of noise if I pass through it on the way to DAW). It is connected as follows: Mic > Mic Pre > Front/Top input of patchbay > Two corresponding outputs on back of patchbay (on...

Mastering engineers will generally try and keep the peak level below 0 dbFS for this very reason. Correct, the DA converter can distort at 0 dbfs, which is why the output ceiling should be set to around -.2 dbfs during mastering. This, however, is a separate issue from distortion that occurs from o...

The Nethercutt
You can see many Orchestrions in action at the Nethercutt Museum North of Los Angeles. It's an awesome place. I believe the largest collection in the world.
If you're in LA it's definitely worth the trip. Be sure to do the guided tour.

You should deliver all files at the same sample rate. If not, who's to know the next guy isn't going to 'f it up, or forget to do it all? You can save yourself this hassle. Remember Van Halen ? Don't let this happen to you. If you had to guess the audio editor probably does audio better, Logic vs Fi...

What is the CD player output connected to? Here's an assumption: professional analog outboard or console. This gear usually will clip after +22 dBu, some after +26 dBu. Thus your CD, with a reference level of -18 dBFS = 0 VU = +4 dBu, will peak at +22 dBu. So it's skirting the threshold of linearity...

It sounds like you're a beginner. I'd start with graphical object based to get your head around the concepts and immediately have some reward. MAX is the app of choice for this. http://cycling74.com/ To program actual DSP chips, as others have mentioned, you'll need more specific programming experie...

I find that Russ Berger consistently builds nice rooms.
Drop by BiCoastal in Ossining for a great sounding room of his. The studio is not very large, but he extended the ceiling over the drum area in such a way that gets an awesome kit sound.

You shouldn't really worry about this and should just move the mics around while listening and pick the spot that sounds better. Just two mics on one source in a space, you'll never really have strict phase problems. This is because the levels, response of the mics, and reflections of the room will ...
