Wow, great heads-up, thanks! I read this last night, thinking two things-- "I'll listen to that link tomorrow," and also I thought that you said "room mic on 'drums'." Going back and reading "lead vocals," and listening to some of those tracks, I'm pretty blown-away. I assume that it was a room mik...

The band was based in NYC and were trying hard to...

This was recorded @ Electrical by Steve Albini. Apparently the Crown PCC160 was used as a room mic on the lead vocals. Worth a listen.

In her mp3 download is a .pdf file with pictures, song lyric sheets, a history of how the album was created over many years. There is also a list there of a number of young, musically educated Southern California musicians who contributed their talents. There is not much exposure of young, college-e...

New album from Nahneen Kula
http://nahneenkula.bandcamp.com/ This is the long awaited album from multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Charlene Gibbs of the band Nahneen Kula. By day she works as a microphone technician at AEA ribbon microphones in Pasadena, California. Definitely something different than what you usually hear here. ...

If you're just starting to build a collection of mics to record things, buy quality stuff first. Buy a Shure SM57, an Audix i5 or Beyer 201 to use on guitar amps, snare drums, toms, whatever. You'll then get results that sound similar to what other people have gotten. The chinese-made dynamic mic cl...

I found that Unsane album posted on youtube and even with the bad things that youtube does to audio, I can hear the lead vocal sounding distorted, effected but limited within a certain range of space. It definitely does not sound like someone added distortion or whatever after being tracked. Sometim...

Nope on the cassette 4-track. Focus on recording to the computer. Buy a 2in/2out audio recording interface. ' Buy a 2nd hard drive to write the audio files to. Buy 2 mics, stands, cables. Use the recording software the interface comes with, or buy something like Reaper online: the license fee is wor...

There's lots of affordable big tube guitar amps around. The smaller tube amps may record well, but nothing beats the sound of a 50 or 100w tube guitar amp pushing a 2x12 or 4x12 cab with volume. Shame that you sold your VTM60, they sound great if you get a good one. JCM800 or JMP Marshalls are the s...

Drummer perspective is correct. You just keep to the mastering . anytime i get a mix where the drums are panned drummer's perspective, i swap L and R before doing anything else. Anytime I hear studio mixes done with the drums from audience perspective, it doesn't sound right. Having the floor tom o...

You should focus on a stereo drum kit sound for this recording. Maybe try the recorderman overhead stereo mic technique with a dedicated front of kick mic maybe 18-24" from the front kick drum head,up a little so it picks up more of the whole drum set. The original Glyn Johns technique with just the...
