Re: comparisons between cheap sd omnis

As pointed out in the article about building the Tape op omnis - they're a variation of the RS pzm. The power supply is based on a design used to give RS pzms a ballanced output. They do sound different but not all that different. Not exactly a variant of the RS PZM, but rather the phantom circuitr...

Re: Show Me A Kick Mic Stand

I've got the little Tama boom stand... it ought to be good for something like kick drum, it won't get tall enough for a guitar mic when I'm standing! Actually the nice thing about the Tama is that the various adjustments can get really tight, which is useful with something as heavy and unbalanced as...

Re: Bass/Treble Roll Off On Mics

Here's the typical scenario: It's 1970, and you're lucky to have a mixer, never mind that it's only got a tone knob and not that fancy 3-band EQ that the big stars can afford. Luckily your MD-421 has a variable lo-cut, so you can get rid of some of that annoying mud on the bottom of the vocals, or t...

Re: DIY mic pres

I've ordered the bulk of the parts for the Hamptone j-fet preamps, basically everything I could get from Mouser. I still have to order transformers, and figure out the power supply. I like the circuit, but the kit seems excessive. I guess mostly I just wanted different packaging. Plus I figured out ...

Re: How was James Jamerson's bass recorded?

Incidentally (and now I'm talking as a bass player instead of an audio guy), Jamerson did use a Precision (the same one over all those years). He used flatwounds and never changed one unless it broke. He had rather high action from being an upright player (on an upright with high action!) an...

Re: How was James Jamerson's bass recorded?

The (hopefully) definitive answer comes from the book, which came out back in the early 90's (it was a book with sheet music and cassettes of the bass lines, along with many pages of history and stories later used in the movie). Jamerson only used the B15 live, and later used a Kustom system for mor...

b3groover:

Hi Jim! Wondered if I'd know a Hammond nut located in Michigan... I passed the above link along to Decker, since he's probably the best person to deal with such nasty age-related issues.

Re: Hammond Organ Repair HELP!!! It's it pieces!

Turning the bus bars is really dangerous and can permanently damage the contacts. The safest way to go is to take them out and clean them. Use the "bookend method". The bus bars come out through the side of the manuals, so first you need to free the manuals so you can lift them up. Well, it didn't ...

Re: Creeping horror

Round up a handful of poets, and let them ramble while you play cool backing music.

Hey, it worked for the Red Hot Chili Peppers!!! Don't you want to be a mega-star?

Re: Bass Tone on Lenny Kravitz's "It Ain't Over 'Til It

I'd disagree on using the foam mute in this case... the bass on the Kravitz tune has a bit brighter sound than you'd get. More like tired old roundwounds and a player who damps real good.

Re: Hammond Organ Repair HELP!!! It's it pieces!

Poke around some organ websites for repair info. And years ago Keyboard Magazine put the Hammond on the cover and had some tech advice included. You won't get to the key contacts by taking things apart... if you get that far, you'll probably never get the damn thing back together. Instead, look for ...

Probably more likely a P-bass. I'd expect a P-bass to get that sound much more easily than a J-bass, anyway.

Re: What recording gear excites you most?

...but seriously...

I really like broken gear. I get to dig in, figure out the problem, fix it, and spend a few minutes playing with it before giving it back. Then I usually get money in return... can't forget that part of the process. ;)

Re: What recording gear excites you most?

I get excited over function generators. that's right, test oscillators. I have seven of the things. I wanted to form a band with just test oscillators once... we'd wear lab coats, thick glasses, and sit at a long bench playing tunes on the oscillators. I had a bunch of ideas for how to make it a re...
