Re: Mastering and 16 bit vs 24 bit
But will there be a noticable sonic difference between the 16 & 24 bit stuff? I know that cd sum down to 16, I just don't know of anyone who has gone to a mastering session w/ mixes of 2 different bit depths. I've always mastered from tape in the past, so this is all new to me...

Mastering and 16 bit vs 24 bit
I'm just finished with a project and I have final mixes @ 24 bit and rough mixes on DAT (16 bit, unless I'm mistaken).
My problem is this: I like a couple of the finals and a couple of the roughs and want to mix and match. Anyone had any experience mixing bit depths like that? Suggestions?

Re: to click or not to click?
I've always found it easiest to play to an approximation of what you think the drum part will be. So if you have access to a midi drum machine, then try and find a loop that gives you a groove that feels good. This has a lot to do with tempo as well. Tempo is very important. So spend some time findi...

Re: mastering in the NYC?
I've had Alan Douches do a record and he does a great job. Emily Lazar @ the Lodge has been highly recommended, Classic Sound does good work, Sterling has an 'afterdark' program where lesser-known engineers work in big name guy's studios after hours. But I think the biggest issue your friend is goin...

Re: are farfisas tune-able?
Be careful though. some farfisa models have a wooden box around the 12 tuners. Of course you could do like one crazy producer I know and get out a Saws-all and saw the box off. then tune away.

Re: professionals recording practice amps?
I know folks (myself included) have done a lot of recording using Magnatones and Estey amps. Low wattge (10 watts, I think)-big growly sound. These amps were primarily sold @ Sears, I believe and can be found for cheap at the yard sales of unsuspecting suburbanites. Sometimes you have to shake 'em t...

Re: Kudos to the AT 4033
I've been using the 4040, which, if I'm not mistaken, replaced the 4033 in the AT catalog. Great mic, reasonable priced. Clear crisp, responsive...blah, blah, blah. If you only have $300 to spend on a mic, then get the 4040. The 4050 is virtually the same mic but has switchable patterns. On the reco...

Re: translating chords on mandolin to guitar
hmmmm...don't have a guitar in front of me and trying to visualize what those note combos would sound like on the mando. do you play them as strumed chords? or are you plucking them indivdually? do you want strummed guitar chords or just to double the note on guitar? going from where zeotrope left o...
