Re: tips for making a room not so live?
Find a library that's giving away old books. Buy some cheap tall book shelves from Wal-Mart. Put the shelves in the corners diagonally, facing the center of the room. Fill them with books, making sure the books are not all pushed up against the edge, creating an uneven surface.

Modern Recording Techniques is $40 but worth every penny. Give it a nice home on your toilet tank.

Re: Micing Accordian
I'm an accordion player who has been miked many different times, many different ways. The main issue is to keep in mind that the reeds in the left hand are constantly in motion. If the player is using the left hand, you will have to either mic from a distance, use an omni, or plan to compress heavil...

Re: Tinnitus cured?
I get it when I listen to loud music. I now wear earplugs at all rock shows and all band practices and it's rarely an issue. The one time I can't deal with ear plugs is when performing. I really need to hear my voice and the other instruments coming through the monitors. One thing I've found that ma...

Re: for those that don't do this for a living
Don't accept society's position that a 9-5 M-F job is the "norm." Most of the dedicated musicians I know have found it's possible to work part time and have plenty of time/energy to dedicate to music or recording or having a social life or whatever. The hard part is giving up the creature comforts: ...

Re: how do i fix this bad guitar tone?
all of this advice has been really helpful. thanks everybody. i'd like to hear more about what you have to say about the ultimate distortion coming from an amp vs. a pedal. as i said in the first post, i'm not a guitar player and this has all been very educational beyond just i think remedying the o...

Re: how do i fix this bad guitar tone?
okay, about the selector lever. i should clarify: it has five positions, but when it is placed in four of those, there is no sound. actually, in one position there is sound, in the second there is barely any at all, and in the final three none. i wish i knew more about the guitar. it is a fender str...

Re: how do i fix this bad guitar tone?
the guitarist in question is a really nice guy and saying anything mean to him seems like saying ten mean things to your average person. thanks for the heads up on brian's guitars. i hadn't thought of it but now that you mention it i've seen that sign while cruisin through carrboro. it's not the onl...

Re: how do i fix this bad guitar tone?
thanks so much for the advice. i was suspicious that even though the guitar is in bad shape the morley pedal wasn't helping things either. i couldn't say for sure because he's the only player i've ever heard who used it. i think i'll suggest he use the overdrive on the bandit instead. oh, and there'...

how do i fix this bad guitar tone?
So the guitarist in the band has an overdrive tone that really bothers us. He plays on a Yamaha and there is basically no sound at all unless the pickup selector is in one of its five possible positions, so I'm guessing some of the pickups are shot. He dropped the guitar once and the jack got bashed...

What a great idea for a tribute! Will those who didn't contribute be able to get a copy somehow? The Come Together track is AMAZING!

Re: so... i bought some oktava mk-012's...
When working on the cheap, try this: Buy a pair of Oktava MK12s for use as drum overheads and an AKG D112 for the kick drum. Record your drums. Overdub lead vocals with the Oktava positioned right on top of the AKG with the AKG directly in line with the singer's mouth and the Oktava pointed slightly...
