Re: good points

but just because you're in tune open, doesn't mean you'll always be sharp up the neck. For acoustic, I usually tune open or around the first 3 frets, but for electric, and I often use a 3 part saddle old style tele, I tune up around the 5th and 7 frets. Right. We may be one the same page here... Wh...

some instruments will actually change pitch if you wack the strings too hard. Going a bit sharp. Yeah, when strings are plucked or struck (piano), that first contact tensions the string, raising the pitch momentarily and producing enharmonic overtones. In some genres or contexts, e.g., elec guit le...

To get the proper bite, ya gotta use a vintage quarter with that authentic textured edge. Not the new ones that feel like they came out of a Cracker Jack box. It's like the difference between analog warmth and digital cold. Avoid quarters made in China.

I was getting into Ozone as my go-to final stage on home-mastered work. But the other day I A/B'd it *entirely bypassed* with the source track and noticed that it was imparting a definitely veiled quality. Spooky. That made me think there may be more times I'd want to reach for L2, as I used to. But...

Cool. If having no sight-line works for you, then it works. It seems to me there are maybe two categories of reasons to have sight-lines. One is technical, e.g., you can be guiding an assistant's mic placement with your hands, like an airplane groundcrew, while you're listening. A lot of those thing...

You're decided... still, I'll throw in a few last-minute thoughts. The basic layout looks quite similar to the basement studio I had when I lived in Seattle. Whatever you do, keep the large room large. By your design #1, it looks like your control room wouldn't have sight-lines into the tracking roo...

I have confirmation now that DP definitely does not have any way to strap plugins across your input channels. Too bad. Caldo71, if I recall correctly (I'm not in the studio right now), DP has had, at least in the past, a recording delay compensation setting that works on all channels globally. I th...

I have a little rig that works great; it might give you an idea or two. The monitors are JBL Control 1, powered by a Symetrix 420 amp. Both fit into a 3-space soft case ("Hybrid" brand) -- the Control 1's are exactly 3 spaces wide so they tuck into the back side. (The case has zippered flaps front a...

BUMP. I revised my proposal above. Most significantly, I figured out how to rearrange things so that the new housemate (you) would have a bigger bedroom with private entrance (the house is laid out sort of like a small motel).

Is listening to a mix converted to mp3 at all worthwhile in terms of being one of the tests of a mix? ... You're not going to hear everything accurately with an mp3 (as others have noted), but for the limited purpose of volume balancing it will *usually* be helpful. And convenient: I discovered tha...

Nice interview, Joel. And nice to now be able to put a voice with your comments here in the TOMB. Good comments on vocal mic placements (confirming my own practice). The one new tip I picked up was to use a pop filter on acoustic guitar. As you mentioned it, I found myself nodding, "yeah, of course!...

Arman, These VSTi's are for what platform(s)? I didn't see that mentioned, in my quick glance at your groovy blog. When you do the Cat Piano VSTi for Mac, will it be compatible with both Tiger and Leopard? ;-) Actually, I could really use a cat piano right now, for one song of a band's album I'm pro...

Yeah, what kayagum said. Actually, about half a game's worth of TV viewing is usually all my conscience will allow me, with everything else there's always to do. Although, now that one of my cats is really into watching basketball -- she stands with her front paws right up on the base of the TV and ...
