Re: Can excessive preamp gain damage ribbon mic?

you can't damage the mic by turning up the preamp gain and the preamp won't affect the movement of the ribbon at all (that's whatever you put in front of the mic that is making it vibrate). I'm assuming you did not have phantom power engaged (although that usually won't hurt most modern ribbons eith...

Re: 2 Noisy Studer 169s - Fix it myself or hire someone to fix?

I just did a deep cleaning on a little Mackie mixer (lots of scratchy and intermittent pots). The only reason I mention this is that you can now get the cleaning supplies at most Home Depots. clean it out good, let it dry, then spray the lubricant in the pots (as best as you can) or faders. Let it d...

Re: Your favorite tips & resources on working with tape

I don't know that you are going to find any deep technical tips on using tape in recent Tape Op issues. Maybe back in the earlier stuff? Most of the articles are more about the producers, engineers, musicians and their experiences and less into technical details of how they used tape (there may be s...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I've just been here for 24 years and miss how it was 2000-2010. I'm cranky. . I feel the same way about Austin. . A friend of mine in Seattle was saying music was dying up there - that nobody wanted to hear original music anymore. I see that happening in Austin too. Not sure if it is also the tech-...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I know this was question for Ryan (and I'm also curious what he got), but.... when I needed something sturdier than the regular tripod and I did not want to spend the $ for another Ultimate MC-125, I got one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SVRLPYY The stand is sturdy and light. The boom was O...

Re: Heritage Audio Britstrip

this was on my radar for a bit too but never got to try one. Ultimately I bought an Empirical Labs MikeE (EL-9) and I like it a lot. Mostly have been using it for bass guitar or electric guitar but one of these days will run snare through it (since the comp is similar to a Distressor). When I record...

Re: Video Overdubbing Software

I didn't even know that Reaper could do that (until it was posted here). I saw something that said for a Windows system, you need VLC installed as well. Might be worth a shot? https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

Re: Video Overdubbing Software

if you have Windows 11, then Microsquish makes you use Clip Champ https://clipchamp.com/en/ I've used it for editing a few videos (it's not too difficult to learn) and you can add/remove audio tracks, although I've never actually done that (at least not on purpose). And (as The Mothers said ) it's a...

dang. I forgot that I used to see notices about "Mojo Nixon and the Toadliquors" (great name) around town. Never caught the show but seems he was around Austin a lot in the 90's-2000's maybe?

Re: Best mics/mic-ing approaches for sax?

if you don't want the sax player to shove the mic in the bell, then you might try putting tape on the floor, or something bigger, to prevent them from moving in on the mic. If you don't they will inevitably (instinctively?) move right up to it, head on... remind them it's not a live show. some...

Re: Best mics/mic-ing approaches for sax?

421 or 441 are pretty good on sax. I've also had good luck with a ribbon mic (I used a Cascade Vinjet) - have the sax player stand about 2-3 feet away from it. Use a pop filter if you want (but should not be needed if standing 2-3ft back). I've also mic'd Alto and Tenor using a U47-style mic and did...
