No difference is correct. Unless you nudge the track a little to get phase difference he's just wasting time and a small amount of processing power.

Thanks. Yeah, I totally forgot about ORTF. I might give that a try as well.

Cool, that's what I thought. And what's this M/S decoder shit? Is that just for people who aren't able to make a copy of the figure-8 and flip the phase? Or does it work some kind of magic? What about using unmatched mics for the figure-8 and cardiod? The only matched pair of mics I have are cardiod...

M/S

Cardiod next to the figure-8 mic or back a few feet (for overheads)? What is the best method? I was taught in school that the cardiod needs to be next to the figure-8 for the stereo image to work and for phase, but I read somewhere on this board that some people pull the cardiod mic back.

I would try looking for hum or noise with no signal running through the circuits. If you see a hum signal riding on top of the power supply, which should look like a flat line, you probably have a bad filter cap somewhere. You should have a little allegator clip coming off the scope probe, hook that...

I think if you ran the signal through a high impedance buffer amplifier that might work.

The other guitarist in my band recently picked up a Randall MTS series RM100M. These things are pretty cool because you can buy different modules for each (three total) channel. All tube driven- they screw right into to front panel. The Kirk Hammet KH-1 sounds really clean and bright. I've used both...

Sometimes it can be really helpful in tracking snare to line up the position of the microphone on the top head where it is in line with the snares on the bottom head.
I'm guessing this gives you a brighter sounding snare? Does it do anything else?

Well, thanks for the suggestions. The setup sounded great. One problem I ran into: Sound in the right over head of the right crash cymbal was wavering as the cymbal tilted and moved about when hit and it caused the stereo image of that cymbal to waver from the right to the center. Kinda strange. I e...

Whoa, I read a really crappy explanation at first but after reading another more in-depth one it makes sense. I'm definately gonna try this. Thanks.

Actually I don't think Glyn John's set up would because of how the drums are arranged. Only one rack tom and one floor tom like David Grohl used in Nirvana. The rack tom is right infront and above the snare. I like that the guy said "You need a really good drummer and a good sounding room". Isn't th...

Snare bleed in overheads

Ok, I know this sounds stupid, as I want snare in the overheads as well as toms. I'm recording a friend of mine on drums and we have only five mic pre's to work with so I've been using two overheads (spaced pair configuration), snare and kick. I like this set up as I like getting the sound of the ro...
