Re: Drummers Headphones?

The king of isolation headphones is the Remote Audio HN7506 - if i got the type number right. It's a helicopter headset with Sony headphone capsules. The ear cushions are so comfortable you can wear them all day and the isolation is top notch, a few dB above everything else. They are expensive. Ther...

Re: Live Room Measurements

I'd ask, how much bass trapping is already there? You could post a few seconds of drums playing in the room or something.

Re: Acoustic Guitar Size in a Bass Heavy Mix

What role does the guitar play in that song/at that part of the arrangement? What kinda frequency range does it need to occupy to do the job? Does it still work when i cut the lows? Do it get away with just an SM57, mono? Is the guitar played well enough to contribute low frequencies to the rhythm?

Re: Supply Chains and Boutique Audio Manufacturers

Funny how the corporate greed that put most production to cheap countries backfires only a couple of decades later. In Europe the gas prices nearly doubled for some time while the oil prices fell by 10%. It's called stock market. We live in societies where goods have to be rare to be profitable.

Re: beyer 740N CK 12 capsule

And i even had the C414 from the era when Beyer started making the MC740 :-) Regarding mics and brand names: i went through a lot of the famous ones and mostly had more than one of them to try.* Some of these did it for me, some didn't. Then made a lot of money selling those that didn't and which yo...

Haven’t checked yet, but a dpa 4060 might drop through the vent hole in my Rogers kick. Hmmmm
I think an dpa 4099 (high SPL version) would work. The little detachable cable could fit through. These 4099 sound nice on drums.

Re: beyer 740N CK 12 capsule

I have two Beyer MC740s. The capsule in there is slightly smaller than the capsule inside my friends C12 or inside my C414 and it looks different.

Re: Recording solo violin

In the old BBC training manuals there were pictures how the sound emanates from instruments, for violin it looked like flower petals from above. You may "fish" for an even sounding spot above the instrument when you listen through isolation headphones while poking the mic around.

Re: Stripping away unnecessary parts of macOS?

I have an office machine, a mixing machine and a few tracking computers in the studio as well. They all have different OS and none of them is totally up to date, because i feel it doesn't offer much for what it takes away. I only ever "upgrade" every ten years or so, when a big enough difference war...

Re: Source for older Sennheiser mic repairs?

Get a broken 421 cheap and find a buddy who fixes such things.

I usually stock a few key parts like NOS capsules from MD409 or Beyer M380, so i don't run into shortage midsession.

Re: How much do you "fix" without telling your client?

to me it's about preserving "the intent" of the players (usually after they have left and can't redo it easily) Exactly that. Things that need to be done are agreed on while tracking and listening back. Usually no need to be done behind the back of the band, after all, fixes should make them happy....

Re: Tom Mic Comparison

Going through most of the usual suspects for tom mics i kind of ended up with Beyer M600s and M700s. Spill is reasonable and not as funky sounding as with a 421, allthough the Beyers don't have the icepick-in-the-eye of the 421 on axis. They were expensive and unpopular when new, so there's not that...

Re: Recording Chain notation

I got recall sheets for all my gear. Inputs, patchbay, eq, comps, fx, splits, the lot. Every setting gets written down, photos get taken all the time through tracking. So either in 100 years there's a book detailing all my magic in a hardbound luxury coffeetable book ... or at least i can set up thi...

Re: microphone death

Beyer M380s died in the early 90s. These thin wires in the 600 ohms coil can die as much as those in all the crappy AKG D12s that go on close to undead. Sennheiser MD409s die because the foam turns to sticky goo and it craps all over the membrane. Had a Sennheiser MD441 go dead because the little ci...

Re: Handheld that sounds like like an LDC

The T funk I was thinking of is around $250. It's the M80. Not sure if it's as amazing as advertised. It was in this here magazine, but they were focused on its snare recording performance. A singer brought the M80 to a gig - pretty good mic. I made a memo to buy one. The original poster left the q...
