I picked up a used Lucid AD9624 on ebay for about $400. It's an excellent 2 channel A/D, and it goes up to 96khz.

I had the same problem when I got an MBox 2 Pro to run with my G4 ibook. I was running a firewire drive and the mbox on the same firewire port (there's only one on the ibook). I picked up a USB 2.0 drive and it took care of the problem.
