Re: mixing bass with hard snappy plucks
If it's inside your DAW: just select the offending giant click, and GAIN it down a lot. I do. Takes a few seconds, and you don't have to fiddle for minutes with plugins. Just bring it down in level until it is no longer a concern. This makes sense too, but I also feel like this isn't just a gain/vo...

Re: mixing bass with hard snappy plucks
Probably a multi-stage process, but I would start with some sort of saturation plugin to clip the peaks (Fabfilter Saturn works best for me). Compressors never work. You could also try re-drawing the waveform. I've had occasional success with that. If you can find other instances of the offending no...

Re: Parallel Compression But With ¨Tape¨ Saturation
I mixed 2 acoustic and vocal songs yesterday and HEAT really does something nice. On the second I was thinking, "What isn't happening here?" and I turned HEAT on and it really came together. I like that you kinda forget it's there and then when you bypass it it's not that different, but the extra 1...

Re: Parallel Compression But With ¨Tape¨ Saturation
Heat is cool. I've been using it on every mix lately. Usually favor the "tape" side as well, pre-additional processing. I don't push it too hard. My favorite plugin for subtle (or not) transient shaping and soft clipping stuff is definitely Fab-Filter Saturn using the clean tape or saturation algori...

Re: FET FEVER
Anyone use those AML 1073s? Seems like no one ever has anything negative to say about them and judging by cursory research, the design seems very thoughtful and well executed.

Re: FET FEVER
Try to find a used Lawson FET47. Incredible mic. I haven't used the Neumann a ton of times, but the Lawson feels pretty much the same to me. So good on vocals, amps, etc. too. I want to believe that the Warm stuff is cool, but I tried one of their 1073 things once and holy shit did it suck. H...

Dwarfcraft Twin Stags.
Does every trem sound you could ever want, but goes way beyond that creatively. One of the coolest pedals ever, IMO. Can literally be an instrument itself.

Re: non-paying clients?
A couple days to pay up is whatever. What you're describing is principle and any leniency reinforces a bullshit attitude that people can just be casual about paying for a services. Would they tell their fucking roofer or electrician "sorry bro, I'll pay ya when I can." Fuck no they wouldn't, but lot...

Re: non-paying clients?
how do you deal with non-paying clients? I've had some in the past that were always late and I had to remind them (pressure them) and it got to where if they wanted studio time, I made them pay ahead in cash. But I feel weird doing that because it makes the whole thing a little awkward. I'm asking ...

Re: tips for mixing a live recording - using gates etc
I bet it'll sound weird if you gate the vocals entirely, or even at all. Maybe an expander to boost the vocals like 2 db or something so it's not noticeably raising the bleed would work. Or set the gate so it only goes down a couple DB. The FabFilter gate is good. I know live vocal mics are supposed...

Re: Bass and octaves and low end
I just remembered a thing I did not too long ago... Soundtoys Filterfreak has 3 presets, "bass thickener", "kick asser-1" & "kick asser-2". I've definitely used those (tweaked a little) on toms and bass to add lower sub octave stuff. Maybe try those? IIRC, you barely need any to notice it.

Re: Bass and octaves and low end
I had an album with a bass VI recently. Just came out today actually. They just don't have the low end like a regular bass does. Any time I tried to crank it on an EQ, it didn't do anything productive. They sound fuckin' GROSS through a V4 on explode volume though. I just made the kick the "sub" ins...

Re: "On kicks with different mics like ya do"
- M88 - bass cab. Historically always used an RE20, but historically also always had to add a hefty midrange boost to get heavy distorted bass to cut through, which I'm finding is not the case with the 88. Just sounds less cloudy. - Soyuz Bomblet - guitar cab - often alone as opposed to the usual ri...

Re: Recording harmonica, never done it before, help!
I've only done it twice, but they were very different contexts. First time was a LDC up close, I think in omni, but possibly just cardioid. That was for a folk thing. More recently was a green bullet, carbon copy for slap, space echo slightly longer than slap, little combo amp blowing up. Sounds so ...
