Re: Can Someone PLEASE Tell me abot The MXR M-136 Dual Limit
Well it's actually a limiter/compressor. There's a switch for 4:1 or infinity:1, so you have your choice of compression or limiting. I usually keep it on the 4:1 setting. It seems pretty versatile that you could have it as your main compressor. As long as you're not expecting anything totally amazin...

Re: Can Someone PLEASE Tell me abot The MXR M-136 Dual Limit
I have one of these and love it to death. At first I thought it would be a rackmount version of the dynacomp or mxr limiter, but it's not quite that crazy. It will completely destroy things in the way that we all love, though. Vocals get trashy and right up to the front of the mix. Drums explode, an...

Re: "Dark," Digital Friendly Mics
If I'm going for a "dark" sound going to digital, I'll usually reach for a ribbon or dynamic, but I think you're probably talking more about condensers than anything else. I think more of what you're looking for is "not the spitty, peaky high end" of most chinese condensers. So let's call it "darker...

Re: Peluso capsules same as MXL?
The Peluso capsule is far and away better than any chinese capsule could ever hope to be. Much more pleasing and balanced sound. Having the capsules tuned properly makes a huge difference in phase response and smoothness of off-axis response. Just put it in there and see for yourself. I was amazed w...

Re: Hey Hamptoners and General Preamp Enthusiasts....
I've been using the tube hamptone on electric guitar on the last few sessions, and have really grown to love it. I find that if I pad the input down, and turn the output up, there is this massive wall of sound coming out of it. The waveform is obviously compressed, but you really don't hear too much...

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 5-5-04
I finished up mixing the new Octopus Project record. Mastering is thursday, so we've been scrambling to get the mixes ready for the past couple of days. It's been a really fun project, and very enlightening. They do a lot of recording themselves, and about half the record was done that way. They hav...

Re: Trail of Dead Drum Sound, any tips?
I know Mike McCarthy and some of his gear, but don't know exactly what he did on that record. I'll see if I can't get something out of him, but most likely he won't remember the details. I know he's got a great ear for drums, and has the trail of dead drummer bash the living hell out of the drums. H...

Re: dbx 160 on vocals?
Just to clarify for people that may not know, there are a couple different versions of the dbx 160. Two of them sound nothing alike. The 160VU, 162VU (1st ever stereo compressor) and 161 are all basically the same compressor circuit, and are consequently on of if not THE first VCA compressors design...

Re: Your killer Digi 001 rig
I'd imagine that it's got a better clock just because it's newer technology and the power supply is internal instead of running off of the damn PCI buss. If you think about it, clock stability relies greatly on a good power supply, and whatever the computer is sending out through that PCI is crap. J...

Re: Your killer Digi 001 rig
I also use an 001 as my main format as well, and have been very happy for the most part. Most people are very surprised with the results I get with it. It really is a very useful tool, and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to learn how to use Pro Tools as just starting out. I use the 8 outputs on i...

Re: Where can I find Stapes omnis?????
Thanks Joel and Chris. Things have been crazy around here, and every now and then things slip through the cracks. I haven't even had a chance to get a new website up yet, but soon, I promise. In the meantime, if anybody wants to try out the new omni's made by Avenson Audio, shoot me an email and I'l...

Re: Polyphonic Spree
I've recorded Polyphonic Spree live to two track in an attempt to top just about all I had done in my life up to that point. I felt like I was on some kind of drug the whole time from the adrenilin and it was one of the best experiences of my life. That band is just pure positive energy. All twenty ...

Re: Tim Kerr + Sweatbox, I'm curiuos.
Bryan Nelson is the main engineer at the Sweatbox. He's a really cool laid back guy that plays in a few cool bands around town like Gorch Fock, and sometimes a few others. His main tracking room is nothing to drool over, being very dead, boxy and small, but I think he's figured a way around that. Al...

Re: Alesis Bitrman
So I just finished my first mixing project since getting this box from hell, and I have to say it is pretty bad ass. Joel, you probably know the guy, Dave Doobinin with Billy White producing. It was some great stuff with a few songs in the very tweaked out there vein. Perfect for introducing this gu...
