Re: Drawmer 1960
I'm interested in upgrading the tubes that are in my 1960, too. How many tubes are actually in that thing? I thought that the mic pre's in that unit were solid state. I know that the compressor make up stage and the DI make up stage are tube based, but I'm not sure what else is in there. Do you know...

Re: Soundelux U195 VS. BLUE Mouse
I tried the 195 a couple of years ago and I loved it. I wanted one as soon as I heard it, and I found that it sounded great on just about anything. Alas, I never could get the money up for one. I did find a really good deal on the Blue Mouse, however. I've been using that mic in every situation that...

Re: Alesis Bitrman
I just got my bitrman yesterday, and it's totally fun. I was trying it out hooking it up to my tv while watching the state of the union address. Somehow it seemed fitting to hear GW talking like a robot through the ring modulator. I can see this box being a lot of fun. Anyone try their Vocoder or Co...

Re: tracking with compression!
Stuff sounds better to me if you compress it twice rather than a whole bunch at one time. And that way you can use different compressors that do different things. So, generally, I'll compress most things on the way in, usually with a slow attack and fast release to keep it lively. Then I'll mess wit...

Re: UREI 7110.. anyone else love this thing as much as i do?
Trust me, if you can solder a cable, you can install this transformer. Cables are a BITCH! It is designed for pcb work, and just pops right in, and then you solder the legs to the pad. You may have to cut a resistor out. Even the unit is pretty easy to take apart. The transformer I got is I believe ...

Re: UREI 7110.. anyone else love this thing as much as i do?
Man, I love mine to death. I got a pair of them for about $150 about two years ago from a shop that didn't know what they had. I put the output transformer in them, and they sound great. I think without the xfmr, you don't get balanced output, but with it, you get the added tone. It's a regular UREI...

Re: Ideas for consoles under $2000
I got my Sound Workshop 34C for around 2K. Add in the shipping, recap, wiring, and general fixer uppers, and you're looking at over 3 grand. Well, wiring is WAY more expensive if you don't already have all you need from another patch bay set up. I would say this console is worth the investment, thou...

Re: POLL: What is your favorite kick set up? (comp/eq/mics)
Man, my kick drum micing technique changes with almost every session. It really depends on the style. But for favorites, I'd have to go with RE20 just inside the kick drum, with the capsule aligned with the front head going into an API. Sometimes I'll run that into a focusrite compounder with the hu...

Re: Studio projects B1
I have a B3, and I like it so much, I ordered another one to have a stereo set. They sound pretty good as room mics, and some vocals. I haven't had a whole lot of time to experiment with them, though. I'd watch out with these mics on toms, though. First time I put it up on a floor tom, I immediately...

Re: Has anyone used this to mic their kicks,,,, or anything
Yeah, that's way too much money for what that is. What I do, is just take a guitar cable and run it from the 15" PA speaker into the DI on a mic pre. Seems to work for me. I'll use the DI on a drawmer 1960 if I want it distorted because that tube stage sounds great overloaded, or I'll run it into an...

Re: Neumann to increase prices....again!!??
I use my mouse on drums all the time. I've used it for a part of a three mic set up, and I really liked the way the drums came through, and the cymbals had a shine to them that was nice. I end up using this mic quite a bit for outside the kick drum, and the leakage is pretty dealable, so I'd imagine...

Re: Tom Mics
I've found the bleed on the 421 to be a little problematic as well, but they sure do have a great sound. I think maybe the trick is that if you're using 421's all the way around is to pull them a little further back, and use the bleed to your advantage. I agree that gated toms are rarely a satisfyin...

Re: what would you use for a kick drum mic
I don't have much experience with the B52 outside of live sound, but I would start there with kick drum micing. If the drum has a hole in it, try placing the mic just inside the hole, with the majority of the mic hanging outside the drum. Experiment with moving it in and out, and find the best balan...

Re: Peluso Mics- U47 tube for under a grand?! 251 for $850?!
I talked to the peluso guy the other day, and he was really friendly and informative. I ordered two of his 89 (not the ones in the 47 copy) capsules to put into some tube mics that I made. I wanted to check out his stuff, and I figured the capsule is an extremely important part of the mic, so if tha...

Re: large diaphram condensers in omni mode vs stapes
There's definately a realism that is there in a small diaphragm mic that's not there in a large diaphragm for some sources. The diaphragm is simply lighter in a sdc, so it takes less force from the air to move the diaphragm. Sounds easy enough. The drawback, though is that you have to achieve the sa...
