Hey Joel, everytime I try to make a donation, it kicks me out saying my session has timed out. I'll try to do a regular send money request from within my paypal account, but you might want to check into that. By the way, I have a 5-year-old son and I can't imagine having to go through that. My wife ...

Hahaha, good catch. :-) Next time I will have to read the title back more carefully. Ahem. I also think help is worth a lot, and I'm incredibly grateful that the TOMB masses have been here for the last couple years to answer all my silly questions. This really is a cool board with a limitless wealth...

For those of you who are playing along, I got the amp back today and plugged it in. I ran my '56 LP Gold Top copy w/ P-90s straight into it. It has a decent clean sound, nothing earth shattering, but sort of jangly. Not much gain at all to speak of. With the preamp volume dimed and the master volume...

Thanks Joel. I thought it was cool looking too, which was a big part of the appeal. getreel, I am picking it up from the amp tech today and will actually get to plug it in and try it out. I wasn't able to try it out before because it was tripping the GFCI in my office as soon as I plugged it in. Tur...

I ended up working a pretty good deal with a heck of a nice guy who builds custom amps. He's going to trade one of his amps straight across for the Magnatone, as he's really into collecting and archiving old Magnatones. Anyhow, interesting anecdote about the PA at the club! I'm getting the Magnatone...

Help! What's this worth?

I've posted a couple other mentions of this old, apparently very rare, Magnatone PA head I picked up a few weeks ago. I just heard back from my amp tech and he says it's probably not very ideal for what I want to use it for, which is okay, I half expected that prognosis. On top of that it needs abou...

Yeah, I record demos for bans here sometimes and in most cases have to do a full drum mic setup, plus scratch guitars and bass. I need to make sure that whatever machine I keep here isn't going to throw a bunch of processor errors while tracking basics on someone else's dime. Not sure a G5 will be a...

My bad... the "Tone King" is really the Tube King, and yes, all of the "Tube Driver" types are starved plate. That being said, I've had pretty good luck with them in the past. Zen- there is also a Phatman, which is 25% less gain than the Budda Zen Man. Mesa- Sorry to spread bad info. No worr...

The classic is the Tube Driver. Others include the Ibanez Tone King. Zen Budda, Mesa makes a couple (some of you may laugh, but if Richard Thompson likes them....), and I personally own and love the SIB Varidrive and Fatdrive. I believe all of them are at full voltage. Most of these pedals take a 1...

Tube Distortion Pedals -- NOT starved plate

I'm looking into tube-driven disortion pedals that are not starved plate design to potentially use as a preamp to my tube amp. I've seen the EH ones and heard the sound samples, but most of the sound samples sound not so pleasing to me. I don't know if it's the operators of the sound samples, or jus...

iMac for Logic Pro

So I may be moving my day job business out of my house and into a real office space soon, which will remove my nice shiny new Mac Pro Intel Tower from the house, which is where my studio/recording setup is. I'm thinking of buying a used G5 iMac just to have at home for recording and wasting time on ...

My impression with Braid is that they don't use a ton of gain. Also, it can depend on *which* marshall head they are using. If it's a JMP, or JCM800, or JCM900. Tones can vary a lot from amp-to-amp. Since they recorded with J Robbins at Inner Ear, you might be able to expand your search by checking ...

- Sony Boombox in my garage, from the mid-'90s, with MegaBass dial - Crappy speakers on our flatscreen TV (they sound great for movies, horrible for music) through our Pioneer Receiver - 1998 Subaru Outback Limited with the 5 Gazillion stock speakers that really don't sound so great - 2002 Dodge Car...

Hey thanks for the link. I actually ended up getting a different head a few weeks ago. I came across an old Magnatone PA head, which I've since come to find out is very rare. Unfortunately, I've not had a chance to hear it yet as it's been at the repair shop getting checked over and getting some iss...

Love the workstation plans! I might have to try building one of those.
