If I'm remembering correctly the 33421 was a line amp, kind of a successor to the 1272, only it's class AB rather than class A. I suppose that would make it a closer cousin to a 1081. However it was never originally intended to be run as a mic pre, and if someone modified it to have that much gain I...

eBay's a dangerous place. I was a member for sixteen years, and I had mostly good experiences but a couple really bad ones. A few that stand out? I bought a U47 for $4k, paid via paypal, only to have the guy never ship it. Paypal gave me my money back. It was a friggin miracle. I bought another "unt...

If you're worried that anyone at the department of buildings cares enough to write down your phone number and put it in some sort of non-existant computer database so they can bust you later you've been eating too many of the local mushrooms.

Call your states department of buildings and ask. There's no easy way to look that kinda stuff up. If it's anything like NYC (which I certainly hope it isn't) they still won't give you a straight answer. In Brooklyn if you have a question like that which isn't clearly covered in any of the statutes ...

Don't forget the Lexicon Vortex. The labeling is horrendous but the stereo effects are great!

The Vintech's are great pres for the price. I wouldn't say they sound quite like real neves but they sound pretty good and the build quality is pretty sturdy, plus they seem to hold a good bit of resale value (as long as you buy them used in the first place). I'd hold out for a used one, I don't thi...

Yep, replacing a capsule is a more delicate job than just slapping a new one in and soldering it in place. You're probably better off letting RODE repair it and saving money to buy a second microphone so you've got options.

We finally have a retro next to our original in the studio this week, however we've been too damn busy to give them a comparative listen. I'm hoping to get a chance early next week some time, and I'll let you all know if I do.

wouldn't using the speaker output of your amp be taking the load off the output? what kind of amp is it? I've been using a '65 bandmaster head to a cut-down drum. I was sure to match the impedance, but otherwise i can't imagine why it won't be fine. There are two kinds of leslies. Some have onboard...

Adam, you're amazing. We're glad to have you back in Brooklyn, if only part time.

I'd love to come by and see the spot / say hi when you're around.

I just use a clean-boost pedal and crank the crap out of it. That usually gives me enough juice to not have any problems. Traditionally the zvex super duper 2-in-1 for it's double boost capacity, plus it sounds pretty nice.

If you use a real one you can get those attributes that made them famous, like warble, wow and flutter and all that tape hiss. Don't forget the time limits before the tape rewinds! All true, but I actually think the best part is the keyboard sensitivity. Absolutely nothing feels as weird as a mello...
