Re: Best Saturation For Specific Instruments

This is kind of like bringing up spaghetti in a pizza conversation, but I've always preferred saturation from amps, outboard boxes and/or pedals. Not even necessarily expensive stuff. The combination of a tone knob, a gain knob and the infinite degrees of how hard you can hit the gain stage by twis...

Re: Tascam 388 Muddy Recording

all the general stuff has been said sans don't clean the rubber parts with alcohol - use mild soap and water

and the 95%+ alcohol is use because of the water content in the lesser types can cause rust

real magnetic head solvent and the spongey swabs work best and fastest

Re: Oktava mk 012 hypercardioid capsules

I have the -10db pads. The are crucial for close micing drums. Thanks for talking a little in depth about the difference between the hyper and cardioid capsules. I've thought about checking out the e609's. They would be great for my mobile rig because of the clips. I have some Heil PR-28's which ar...

Re: Oktava mk 012 hypercardioid capsules

you'll possibly want the barrel pads too if you don't have em already I don't think the less phat issue will not be too much of a problem with some eq you will prob have to point the null (side in hyper) away from the cymbals rather than the back (like in the cardio) - and that is kind of a PITA and...

Re: Oktava mk 012 hypercardioid capsules

they tighten and loosen the direct sound gets more focused to what you point it at for sure so they need more precise positioning the rear lobe of the pattern will pick up a lil too (like a lopsided figure of eight) so again more finicky with positioning and phase relationships they sound a lil les...

Re: Looking for mixer to pair with Fostex R8

someone recently brought their entire tape machine (tascam 1/2"-8) and soundcraft spirit folio this version https://www.gumtree.com/p/audio-dj-mixers/soundcraft-spirit-folio-sx-mixer/1319001717 and it worked very nicely for tracking routing, etc. I used all external preamps though so I can't say if ...

Re: reference listening

yea probably good to use the exact same path from mix down "deck" to monitors/room

also maybe a good idea to SPL match your A to B comparison in the room too since that difference will skew the mix significantly ?

I dunno

I just use references for broad things like style mostly

Re: reference listening

I don't think it matters as long as it works as a reference for your purposes

even if it's the same music on the same format the particular master might be more significant or at least that will be a bottleneck before the format

so that's another thing to listen out for

Re: Mixing an 8 piece band with an edge

Yeah the reverb on his records is totally key to me. I "get" room sound, and I understand various effects styles being applied to tracks (pre-delay, plate vs spring vs digital etc), but I can't crack the way they put space into these recordings (or capture it). It's very cool sounding. it sounds to...

Re: Mixing an 8 piece band with an edge

best guesses :high: tape compression/saturation - transients are soaked up dynamic mixing with different sections having different mixes rolled off highs and lows Fela vocal sound like a cardioid (proximity effect) valve mic with a rolled off top SDC on overhead/room drums maybe like a bit farther t...

Re: the return of the ubertar ribbon mic

better transient response (detail) and higher amplitude output I think are the main advantages

to me it equates to higher fidelity and an apparent airier quality up top
