My thoughts: The fact that a small change in the settings of the bass rig outweighs, by orders of magnitude, the difference between two completely different converters, and throws the entire test out the window says something about where our priorities should be, no? The B-2 is a beautifully enginee...

Of interest to Hammond B-3 owners

I don't own a Hammond, but I'm aware of how beloved this instruments are among those who do. I read this article with a mixture of fascination and horror, and thought I should pass it on.

Found this while looking for schematics for my JX-3P. Fantastic selection of keyboard service manuals. They request a modest donation, but I think it's well worthwhile for complete service documents in high resolution.

You gotta get the center farther away from the toms and cymbals by at least a 3:1 ratio to the close overheads distance to cymbals and toms to avoid phase issues. Just to be clear, the 3:1 rule is for situations where you are recording two or more different instruments, each with their own mic, in ...

I actually use Massey's TapeHead on the mix bus quite often. The trick is to set it as clean as possible, drive at 0, output at full. It doesn't always work, but when it does it's magic.

so steve means they're playing to track, right? they've just done it the hard way by making a robot that plays the track on live drums and guitar hero controller... well, tech is great but i won't be interested until somebody makes art with it.

There is a very small delay even with all the buttons out, since it's still passing through the converters. All linear filters are basically very short delays, whether the time element is a capacitor/inductor in an analogue filter, or a delay line in a digital filter. When you tweak the feedback kno...

effectron trick

This is a simple trick, and I'm sure I'm not the first to figure it out, but I thought I'd post it since everyone on this board and their grandmother seems to have one of these. Next time you've got all the buttons popped, and the mix on the wet side for that distortion thing, try playing with the f...

I'm not sure that moisture is such a big deal. It should only be a problem if it's actually condensing on the capsule, and, regardless of the relative humidity, that should only occur if the temperature of the capsule is for some reason lower than that of the surrounding air. Leaving the mic on, eve...

"The toms, which were really well recorded, went through my stereo Pye compressors to make them more explosive, and were also sent to my stereo 1176 compressors and my Chandler EMI compressors. The 1176 and the Chandler are also explosive, so basically the tom sound was fucking explosive."

I've had to get my ears flushed out a couple of times now. Both times it was right at the peak of a major project, deadline bearing down, and all of a sudden I would lose all the high end in one ear. I'd make an appointment with my doctor and after five minutes with a syringe full of warm water I co...

Way to stimulate the economy, guys/girls.
Better to buy used from your fellow Americans than to further inflate your trade deficit with China (Boutique-ey American-made gear aside, since it rarely depreciates enough to be worth the difference)

This is a great discussion, and I couldn't help but chime in. My background is largely in sound art/electroacoustic music, but I think a lot of the theory we deal with is directly applicable, and influences/is influenced by the recording of "popular" music. One of the basic ideas goes like this: Whe...

I hear its also less of a cpu hog. Is there truth to this? For some reason Pro Tools 7.3 is much much worse than any other DAW software I have ever used. I fired up roughly the same set up in Cubase 4 and was shocked to see how much better it performs... Please tell me 8 is better. As far as I can ...
