Re: What We learned about Compressors!

The difference between Version 1 and Version 2 is largely that the V1 uses metal film resistors in the signal chain and a symmetrical VCA setting, and V2 uses carbon comp resistors in the signal chain and an asymmetrical VCA trim setting. In layman's terms, the V1 is fairly clean, and the V2 is a bi...

Re: What We learned about Compressors!

That Alesis/Black Lion thing though...so little money, and such a good sound. Hey, thanks for the nice comments about the 3630 modification! The slow attack time is something that I intentionally designed into this modification because I wanted the 3630's VCA to simulate something more like an opto...

Re: Are audiophiles for accuracy?

Audiophiles look for accuracy and realism in their systems. An equalizer is a sonic no-no, because it lengthens the signal chain and tampers with the original signal. Sure, every component has a transfer characteristic in some regard, but the goal is to have a system with the least amount of transfe...

Re: Bellari RP503 modification

Thanks for the nice comments. Hopefully some people will find the RP503 mod useful. Also, I'm currently looking into modding some of the little Presonus units, such as the compressor and the EQ, as well as the good old ART Levelar.

Bellari RP503 modification

Here's a modification for the Bellari RP503: http://www.blacklionaudio.com/RP503.htm This isn't my mod, it was sent to me by someone from Austin TX, and it sounds quite promising. I hope you guys find it useful. Also, my site finally loads properly under Mozilla, so you're not forced to view it excl...

who posted about nOhr speakers a few months ago?

I remember a hi-fi type thread here a few months ago, and someone here
mentioned a company called nOhr. I've tried the search function, but it yields nothing. Who here has nOhr stuff?

Re: I pray for the death of Clear Channel Communications

I just wanna grab some popcorn and watch this sucker burn. I would love to think that these fools would continue their descent blindly, but chances are they're going to make some revisions in the way they do business in order to turn things around. I'm hoping that, at the very least, they'll recons...

I pray for the death of Clear Channel Communications

It's astounding to me that this company's less-than-stellar, nay, putrid approach to radio has managed to last as long as it has, but perhaps the end is near... I know that most people on this board probably don't invest in stocks, but I feel compelled to point out that Clear Channel's stock has bee...

Re: how to measure head room on a mic pre?

hey i was just wondering if someone could let me know how to measure or determine the amount of headroom ona mic pre. because i don't think gain and head room are the same. You're right--they aren't the same. They're not even related, although as you've noticed, headroom has an effect on how the ci...

Re: blacklionaudio ART Mods

Do you do the mods also or do you only distribute the plans? No, I do the mods as well as distributing the plans. If I sent you my ART DPS (it's basically two MPs, right?), how much would it cost? The DPS is two MP V3's, plus user-selectable input impedance if I'm not mistaken. I'll send you a PM t...

Re: blacklionaudio ART Mods

Tell me more about the ART mod. Well, I've tried to make it a fairly thorough overhaul...it's kind of an unusual design for such a simple little preamp. The power supply generates six different supply rails using a voltage multiplier and Darlington transistors--not really the best choice for audio ...

Re: blacklionaudio ART Mods

can anyone with the 3630 from black lion compare the sound and character of it to any well known compressors out there? Personally, I don't know what to compare it to, although I've heard comparisons to a number of different compressors. It's got a fairly distortion-free sound, however it's not tra...
