He has kept the fire burning for SO long. He makes the world a better place. I nominate him for big cheese american HERO!!! In my fantasy world he MUST produce One Daniel Johnston record, and One Randy Newman record before everyone croaks. Then the world would be an EVEN BETTER place. ( .... all the...

I got the bad-assest formica topped home made work table at a yard sale down the street for $10. After about 1 hour of cleaning it up (it was apparently formerly used by a fossil fuel motor enthusiast), and then cutting a couple of inches off of the legs, I got the nicest mixer table I've ever had. ...

I think the demo reel is a great idea. I did one once. I put an ad in the local rag and said "ask for a demo disc". I got a sane number of requests, and I got a bit of work out of it. (This was a demo reel of my live to 2 track stuff.) traditional wisdom says folks have no attention span, so less is...

I would assume doubling certain beats at certain times, emphasizing in as dramatic as you want ways the best parts of this "beat" track is within a traditional job description of a "mixer"....(doubling part of the track?? reamping in the room? replaying the kick and snare parts on boxes and pans rec...

I Caulk

I Caulk. My right hand has massive squeeze power. I've gone through almost 200 tubes of sonnebonne np-1. gaps, cracks, holes..... any time, anywhere, any void... The spiders run scared. My clothes are a mass of dull grey smudges.
I caulk.

all the amps suggested so far (except the little smokey) are more expensive and louder than the little silvertones and valcos and magnatones and mascos and airlines. The champ IS a champ, it's true, but it's purty loud for a little amp. where do you live? You need to visit one of those boutique-y us...

an sm-57 is excellent on nylon string. Don't point it at the sound hole, though, unless it's a foot or more away. (mud)

The drawmer 1960. a stereo compressor/ mic pre. It's an easy to use, extremely flexible pair of inputs. It saved me when I needed simplicity and extreme varieties of sound, and I didn't know shit. I still use it all the time, and I stil don't know shit..

Why don't you want a 440-8? My understanding is that the 440-c is a fabulous, stable machine. Of course, anything fom that era ought to be all "gone over" from top to bottom, but you should be able to find one for 1-2k. I bought one last year for $1500, and it will be another 2 grand to make it into...

One man's trash is another man's treasure....... YES!!
It's also guaranteed that music recorded in a studio made of recycled materials is actually BETTER than music recorded in a studio made of new stuff.

The high end of ribbon mics is one of the mysteries of life. It sounds dark, yet in context of the music ,the high end seems apparent. Also, like tommy says, ribbons usually need more distance from the source to breathe. A bit further, especially for vocals, speaker cabinets and percussion.

You are describing my first permanent space. It was, actually, a 20x20 unfinished garage. I stole insulation out of an abandoned porno-drive-in theatre concession stand to insulate the existing walls. I scammed over half of the wood I needed to build my second set of walls (the room within a room......

I also got one of those lovely card catalog cabinets, but I'm using it for newklies. (tubes, connectors, parts, strings, mummified cat pe...
