I've done it several times with my own recordings, but not often with others peoples music. There is often a deadline involved and I don't have the time to rebuild everything even when it's sounding a little off. I usually trust my overall mixing intstincts, so I'll do something similar to drumsound...

I had good success with claps and stomps by hangning a LDC in a medium sized room with wooden floors. The wood really makes the stomps sound great. If you don't have that at your house or studio, can you go mobile and search a place out in your area? It's worth it IMO. I've used carboard too...that ...

For the question above about bleed....Does your mic pre have a low end roll off? That should help right away....plus you can roll it off more with your eq in the mix.....but bleed CAN be great..... Indeed it does have a roll off, which I have used. And you're right that helps for sure. bleed is ok ...

...but the drummer wants to acheive this classic Motown drum hit with a big reverb. And I'm just not sure that will work on the full kit take because there is too much bleed and his other playing is too busy to give that same feeling. Classic. The drummer wants to sound motown and the only honest r...

I think that is what really sets the punk bands I really love from alot of the newer "slick" sounding groups. The drums....that's really the ticket. I agree with the general cringe at the Fat Wreckords production...and I really can't see why so many newer bands find that appealing. It's all looped a...

More digression..... I wish I had a barrage of mic pre's at home....but I'd have to sell my spare organs to afford the stuff I want! Sure I have used the stuff engineering at other peoples studios, but I just don't have this money to do this at home. I'm trying to get by on mostly direct into a digi...

Get it right during tracking, where you still have the option to change mics or move them around to get the sounds right. If you've got phasing when you're listening and getting sounds, how do you know if that kick mic sounds as good as it can. What if you wait until after the fact and discover tha...

For the bass, try taking a mic (condensor or dynamic), rolling it up in a sheet of foam or something, and pressure-fitting the mic/foamball underneath the bridge, between the strings and the body of the bass. Experiment with placement and mic selection to get the best sound. Ideally, use a directio...

Awesome post. Wavelab is a really cool studio, I've had a few friend who have recording there and loved it. I've always been a big fan of omni mics and large rooms. Add some wood floors and a nice amount of reverb and you have an amazing sound. Very classic. I really love recording in tiles bathroom...

Would a spaced pair of omnis and an LDC in the center give you a more phase-coherent image? maybe...? I've done this a bunch with good results. Chris Garges Charlotte, NC Me too. You get a pretty awesome sound depending on the room. Recording in a rather large room can give you a nice sound with th...
