Re: Thoughts about long unbalanced runs???

DAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WASSSSSSUP!!!!!!?!!?!?!??! I like your solution, but now I'm thinking of just doing XLR's and using DI boxes...cheaper... easier... more efficient??? Would I f#@k shit up if I used, say, an IMP2 on each end??? ...

Re: Thoughts about long unbalanced runs???

Well, the TS cables would be exclusively for guitars (and what not), so I'm looking at _maybe_ four tracks of this stuff... only if someone wants to play in a different room... Anybody know how to convert an unbalanced line into a balanced line (and back)? I know it involves a balancing transformer,...

Re: do I need to master?

Right on. It's helpful, when "mastering" your own stuff, to first ONLY use a limiter, and ONLY to maximize the bit depth of the CD. (In other words, limit just enough to get your volume in the ballpark of other CDs.) Then you can reference stuff and work on improving your mixing, which, ultimately, ...

Thoughts about long unbalanced runs???

I'm looking to install a multi-room snake thangamajigger so as to maximize flexibility. Each room will (maybe) have XLR, TRS, midi, and TS connectors. Howevah, the runs will be 30-50 foot(ish) and I dunno if I should bother if a TS run that long will always sound like ass. I've considered converting...

Re: Tracking at 44.1 better than 48k?

Just to add my $.02, I agree with the above logic.

Removing one out of every 12.307692... (?is that right?) samples and re-interpolating the remaining samples is just not a good thing. I'm all for "the higher the bit depth, the better," so long as as appropriate dithering is applied.

Re: Drum mixing and gates

Well, I'd mess with dynamics if you're in the mixdown stage. Obviously, tracking with dynamics is riskier, but can be done with great results. DON'T BE AFRAID TO MESS WITH THE ATTACK KNOB!!! In fact, I'd say the attack knob is the single most important knob on drums.

But purism is bliss, isn't it?

Re: Need recomendation for EASY 8 track recorder

Wow guys, thanks for the link. We'll probably try to snag that one, and refurbish it. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

Re: Need recomendation for EASY 8 track recorder

Thanks guys. We will have a mixer (probably something 16-24 channel, 4 bus-ish) and for the recorder, I need to be able to record at least 8 channels at a time (line inputs and/or mic inputs).

Does that narrow my search any?

Need recomendation for EASY 8 track recorder

Hey guys, I'm setting up a small, easy-to-use recording setup for a good friend of mine, and was looking for a decent 8-track cassette machine, but I've realized that people don't really make those any more (if you guys know of one, that would fit the bill perfectly). Now, this guy has no experience...

Re: Dude, I might get a Dell... any comments/experiences?

One small complaint: whoever the hell designed the case for the Dell I worked on last night was a fucking moron. They had screws in the CD Rom drive, from both sides of the case, but here's the kicker... You can only open one side of the case!!!! DOH! Silly me thinking I could swap out a component. ...

Re: Can I compensate for a mediocre Soundcard w/ Good EQ ski

The very worst converters I've ever "heard" are Soundblaster converters, and they were still usable. Sound quality, in as far as purism goes, is slightly overrated IMHO. Just think about how many tools you have as opposed to 20 years ago. But no, EQ will not really fix the problems that a bad conver...

Re: Cool Edit Pro difficulties

Ah, I see... you have one of those 1/8" trs inputs... I think I used a Radio Shack adapter and just adjusted the level from a Digitech RP-8's instrument out. Do whatever you have to, if you fry the soundcard (not likely), you really didn't lose much.
