Re: portastudio or stick with computer?
Might be worth going for a cheap digital 4-track, that way you can hook it up to your computer if you want to. I have a digital eight-track i still use from time to time to do just that, really helps with recording at rehearsal spaces etc. I think 4-tracks are cool if you don't have a lot of space ...

Re: portastudio or stick with computer?
I think a four track would be perfect for you..I just bought a 424mkII for my girlfriend to write with..i was testing it out and it brought me back..IMHO they dont sound bad at all..in fact its much simpler to get good sounding stuff with cassette than digital (also an opinion)..things tend to gel ...

portastudio or stick with computer?

Re: Mic Pres
I guess you could do it by getting an adapter.....but then you can't mix your volumes. SO basically for each mic you need a seperate mic preamp channel. You will need a mixer of some sort.

Re: English as a Major...
unless you want to teach it I don't know what else you can do with an english degree. Regardless, it's been shown that 60% or something end up doing jobs that their major wasn't, so do what you want to do.

Back when I was first starting, with nothing but my sound blaster, no microphones. I ran a 1/4 to 1/8th cable from my amps speaker output, to my line in. Sparks would fly from the cable as I plugged it into my computer XD. Sounded awful too.
