What, no takers? Just saw this is now available in AU as well for you Mac-hippies. It really is a great sounding compressor and really is free; it's one of the most hardware-sounding VSTs I've tried. And no, I'm not affiliated.

I have been searching for EMT140 impulses as well, to no avail. I know that Nebula has an EMT140 impulse set, that supposedly sounds very nice. I tried to install the demo + 1 free impulse available for the set (with a 2 second decay), but couldn't get things working on my system. I'll try again. M...

Yes, these guys are my favourite software devs. This new comp is fun for smashing stuff into distorted oblivion.

Molot compressor

I've been really enjoying this free vst compressor so I thought I'd post a link here. This thing stands up to really expensive plugins and is virtually artifact-free. It's quite aggressive and makes a great drum buss compressor. Looks cool, too! I'd be interested to hear other people's opinions of i...

I really like the Heil PR-30; if I had to pick only one mic to record an album with, that would be it. Has a nice full range and decent top end with no brittleness. Actually, the majority of my mics are LDD's, including SM7, MD421, PVM 520TN... Since going mostly ITB I like the more sort of "mellow...

After reading a Sound on Sound review, I ended up buying the 6's. The reviewer's opinion was that the 5's were too thin, the 8's were too boomy and the 6's were just right. Feel free to insert a suitable Goldilocks reference here. I've been very happy with mine in a small-ish treated room, though I ...

I love it; the price is great and their support and business model are excellent. I don't think you can go wrong with it.

You may want to have a look at this: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=60483 This guy has spent a lot of time making a custom Puppy distro that includes Reaper and a lot of other goodies pre-installed. I played around with Linux for recording but have found the hardware support to sti...

I have a pair of HM1s and they're definitely in the "bang for the buck" category. They're nice as drum overheads and on thin-sounding sources, though I find them too boomy for things like vocals and acoustic guitars. I see they've just announced a group buy which makes me very tempted to try one of ...

Interesting how people feel about the same piece of gear. I've got three PR-30s and I love them. I could record an album using nothing but them. I find them well-balanced without being overly bright or brittle sounding in the high end. I guess it goes to show that you'll have to try one out for your...

I'm definitely down with modding and hearing modded vs. stock comparisons, but comparing it to an SSL is a bit like doing a Strat vs. Les Paul shootout in my opinion. I guess I've never really understood the point unless they're both aiming to sound exactly the same.
