i always punch manually in logic. very rarely do i have to trim the region... logic is pretty realistic in punching One other nice thing about Logic (and probably other computer DAWs) is that you can use crossfading to make the edit really smooth. The more you overlap the regions, the longer the fa...

Re: preamp into cassette recorder?
Another quick question, is it possible to use a recording interface (firebox, firepod) as a standalone preamp? With the firebox, sorta. You still need it plugged into the computer to tell it where to send signals, but it's zero latency. Use their "zero latency mixer" software to route inputs 1 & 2 ...

And they've got that song that uses the chord from "25 of 6 to 4" And all those ones that are Kinks or Who progressions... I'm not a Green Day fan, but let's be fair. If the only thing that set one song apart from another was its chords, we'd have only a few hundred songs (and some more just like t...

Call me crazy. How about getting a 100ft AC extension cord and using wiring that up as your speaker cable? You're crazy! Actually, I hadn't even thought of using speaker cable. I was going to use regular 1/4" at line level and use a powered speaker. But speaker cable is a good idea, I could control...

Best $50 I've ever spent on gear
Yesterday I bought a 100ft mic cable so I could mic stuff downstairs without dragging my whole setup down there. I just leave a mic plugged in down there, and I'm using it all the time on the piano. There's a cricket that lives near the window, I recorded him for later use as a click track (or pitch...

Re: Your thoughts are wanted & welcome.
I would like any & all opinions, comments, critiques, etc. Just let me have it. :D The vocal is a little buried, so maybe pull the guitar down a little when the vocal comes in. I would use less reverb, too. My rule of thumb with reverb is to apply enough that it sounds right, then use a little less...

Re: One of my first mixes...be gentle...
EDIT: I don't think that's working. Anyone have any ideas on how to host this thing? That's my friend's server it's on. It's working! I haven't listened to my jazz collection with my 'engineer' ears, so I can't say I've got any sort of background here. But I think it sounds great, everything is wel...

Re: Tascam 246 and 424mkIII
of course that this prooved unusable, apart from dumping 4 tracks into 2 (hard panned left and right) and then use the other 6. I'm not planning to do much bouncing, but is it possible to bounce down to 2 tracks using just one machine? The 424 manual describes how, so I assume the 246 can do it too...

Re: How to position kick drum and bass guitar in the mix?
Another trick that's brought up once in a while here is called ducking. Basically, you use a compressor on the bass guitar and feed the compressor's side chain input with the kick drum track. This causes the compressor to act when the kick drum hits, quieting the bass guitar on each hit.

Right Ear/Left Ear
I just mixed a simple acoustic guitar tune and put the dry signal hard left and the reverb buss hard right. It sounded great in my headphones, but pretty bad in the car and through my monitors. I put my headphones on backwards today and it sounded bad, like it did in the car. But it still sounds gre...

Re: Tascam 246 and 424mkIII
Mark and diogo, Thanks for your very helpful replies! I not sure I understand the buss thing... what's the difference between these and the "effects sends" and the tape outs? Looks like the effect sends are post-fader and post-EQ, the tape outs bypass everything, and the buss outs are basically subm...

Tascam 246 and 424mkIII
I'm interested in getting a 4-track machine and I've narrowed my options down to the 246 and the 424mkIII. I've read enough about the 424 to have a good idea what it can do, but I couldn't find any documentation about the 246. I'm hoping someone can explain the differences between the two. For insta...
