KRK Rokit 5 G2 + sub served me well for a while, and my Adam A7's are very useful as well.

- shadow hills mono
- chandler germanium (if i can find one)
- api 512c
- GR MP500NVg

500 Series - How did you get started?

I've been wanting to enter the 500 series market, and am wondering how others got started - buying a lunchbox and an API pre, or a fully loaded luncbox, esed, new, etc. I see Free Lunchbox deals when you buy 4 500 units, but am considering just starting with a lunchbox and a single pre. I am curious...

I have fond memories of when I started recording strangers. Went around to local open mic nights and offered to record folks to help get them CD's to sell and use to get gigs. Definitely stepped out of my comfort zone. Learned a lot about audio work and dealing with people in general.

Yes indeed, it was very delicate, more delicate than trying to desolder a component from a board without lifting the trace. Also, I saw a potential issue with the ribbon skewing in orientation with the magnet, but was able to keep it straight by the time i got it clamped down. Definitely a good expe...

Update - I opened up my ACM200 active ribbon. Also a dual ribbon, but they looked good, no sag.

If you open up your ribbon mics, especially the less expensive ones, be very careful - the bolts can shear easily, and of course the ribbons are tear-rific

Fixing ribbon sag

I recently bought a Vox Nightrain, and it can get nice and chimey / tube juicy. Knowing how my TNC Audio ACM4 dual ribbon has a smooth top end, I was curious to hear the combination. Listening to playback, I heard a fuzz on bass notes, that I couldn't hear directly from the cabinet while playing. Ha...

MJ - Thanks for idea, sounds golden.

Off topic tangent - I have an MCA SP1, which I modded with Scott Dorsey's design, and is a huge bang for the buck. I do a lot of live recording, and it is definitely a go-to mic. Sounds great on a drum kit, very smooth and balanced.

Probably my next mic.
Woah I just noticed the variable polar pattern, not just 3 patterns, but 6 additional patterns in between.

I'm pretty happy with my Apex 415 multipattern. Great utility mic, inexpensive ($109 + free shipipng). Used an a variety of instruments, and handy for M-S arrays.
