Whatever you do, don't buy a Samson headphone amp. Off-balance stereo image + annoying buzz = total crap. Unfortunately its all i got to work with :(

Do you mean a legit "variant" or the counterfeit Chinese ones that started showing up in guitar centers a while ago?

I guess i'm as confused by this as anyone else...why would there be a market for this stuff? seems like there's too much similar stuff out there already.

earthworks QTC1. very transparent. I've used these as drum overheads and they pick up practically the whole kit (still needs low end reinforcement) while keeping transients audible.

I try to avoid using eq at all during tracking so i can learn which mics and mic placements work for which applications. so far i haven't run into situations where i know beforehand which elements of the mix are going to need eq, so i save it for teh mixdown phase.

Hmmm...my PT LE version came with a bunch of 14-day trial plug-ins that need the iLok to operate. I just haven't used them since the trial period expired.

The Seagate drives with various custom enclosures seem to be the most reliable, from what word-of-mouth i've heard. Glyph drives also have a good reputation although they're more expensive than necessary. I've got a Mercury Elite Pro and i've never had any problems with it; it's fast enough, hasn't ...

Not sure about albums/singles, etc., but as far as tv commercials go, i think most people would take the quiet ones as a cue to get up and use the bathroom. not that they don't do that already; there's just so much loudness out there already that it would get lost among everything else.

does anyone else have problems getting the rubber covers for canalphones to fit properly? I'm convinced i have abnormally small ear canals because the rubber/silicone covers on my e2c's always cause them to fall out (even the smallest size) so I use the foam ones. Isolation's not great, but enough f...

please do not cause the engineer's eardrums to explode by playing while he/she is setting up mics. and if your kit goes out of tune easily, re-tune it before every session.

Just a thought... Maybe more people than not do like the sound of louder albums. It seems from discussion here and elsewhere that most people consider the loudness epidemic to be caused by labels pushing for more volume from the ME, and it's probably a safe bet to say that the labels primarily do t...

I've found using omni overheads (more than 18 inches over the highest cymbal) balances a kit pretty well. i start mixing with those two and add in mics on the other drums as until it sounds comparable to a live performance- obviously kick and snare need reinforcement with this technique.
