Re: Mic'ing a Bass with a Condensor
I've used these mics with great success: U47 U47fet U87 Soundelux U195 421 D-112 RE-20 AT 4047 AKG C-535 I almost always use a condenser if I have it. And I always run a DI, even if I don't end up using it. You just never know when you'll need a little bit of the DI in the mix. Especially when all t...

Re: Pro Tools Question
One thing to try is to set a record allocation time (in Preferences) to around 15-20 minutes. When you put ProTools into record, the system looks at how much space is left on the record hard drive and if you don't set a record allocation time then the system looks at the whole drive. By setting a re...

Re: MicPre Brent/Chandler/API
I own two Averill 1073 clones. These are not real Neve parts but a reproduction of them. I use them all the time on drums, bass, guitars, and vox. I also have two Averill 1272 (real Neve) pres. The 1073's do sound different than the 1272's but not in a bad way. I went to another local studio and A/B...

Gobos
Does anyone have any plans for making some good gobos? I'm very good at woodworking/construction, I just don't have any solid ideas about how to go about making some gobos. I was thinking maybe some with wheels, plexi-glass on top, hard surface on one side, insulation on the other. Any ideas or link...

Re: Drum Editing, Pro Tools style
You have ProTools so have the drummer do a couple takes. Also, work with good drummers. That being said, this is what I do. I set up the session in Grid mode and generate a click from ProTools (if the client doesn't already have a click). I use playlists so I can avoid having to move hits around. I ...

Re: Soundelux mic comparisons
I've got a U195 that I absolutely love. It has become my go-to kick drum mic. The "fat" switch is awesome, you can really add some low thump to a kick (or bass). I've used mine on kick, bass guitar, elec. guitar, acoustic, vox, piano. It doesn't always work for every application but it does sound go...

Re: Pro Tools rig in Portland?
I have a portable HD|3 rig in Seattle. I rent it out to other local studios and film scoring gigs. Maybe we can talk further if you can't find something in Portland.
