I can't see how a recording of each piece of the drum-set made separately would sound musical. The drum-set is one instrument made up of several components. Part of what's annoying about drum machines and drum replacement is that the sounds are out of context. The BD and the toms don't rattle the sn...

I'm cool with Boston. I do hope it goes back to New Orleans when New Orleans is ready for us.

Mjau is talking about some stuff I played for him. The ART toob MPA is a great and cheap rackmounted distortion box. I love to take a mic and put right over the BD and run it through the MPA and just kill it!

Congratulations Cowman! My room was done before I ever saw it. There's a lot of track lighting that's pretty bright. I never use it during sessions, but it's very handy when the tech is here, or I'm doing my own service or cleaning the joint. I think of them like work lights in a Theater. Any studio...

Does the level on the burned CD match the levels you saw on your Korg? If so you need to have a good master done, and/or mix a bit hotter.

I would guess the 'non-musicians' are friends and family. They should be able to get over not using the main entrance once thay realize you're not treating them 'like the help."

Don't expect to buy used RADARs for the price of PT mix systems though...

The singer in my own band has a thin and odd voice. A trick that seemed to work recently (after 8 years of recording the guy) was to lower the mic to mid chest level. I think I angled it up towards his mouth a bit. So I literally recorded more body so I could hear more body.

Being a client does not always give you the opportunity to jump and get your feet wet. Also a school is great for people with little experience to learn from the ground up.

Like mics or restaurants, there are good schools and bad schools.

I think the key will be to talk to potential mastering engineers and tell him or her what you have said here. Emphasize that you're looking for mastering with a 'light touch" to take the project that extra 10% not a wizard to make chicken salad out of chicken shit. Isn't Jeff Carroll at Blue Field i...
