Re: Holy crap! I love tape!!! 15ips RULES!
if set up correctly: 30 ips= What you heard when going to tape through your monitors, comes back sounding like what you heard. 15ips= A little less fidelity coming back at you off the machine. Atlest that was how it was explained to me. Can I tell the difference, I don't know, I record in my basemen...

Re: SM57's as overheads
Ew. They're awful as overheads. Of course it all depends on what sound you want, but I think that the purpose of overheads is to snap a good overall picture of the entire kit. An SM57, being a cardiod dynamic, has a freq. response too limited and focused to get a nice balanced picture. Blu, I heard...

Who is your 'favorite' Mastering Engineer?
Who does the best job for you? Who sits there and actually listens to how you hear the final outcome of your album/music/whatever??? Is it a person in a converted basement/attic/bedroom/etc...??? Do they master inside a computer? Outboard gear? A mix of both? Where are they located? What do they cha...

Re: What Did You...12-07-03
Listened to the album I got mastered on Saturday. Sounds Fan-freaking-tastic. Just the way I like it, it's not super compressed :-) It doesn't stay in the -2 to -.00099999.... area. Goes all the way down to below -18 on some parts. Went to the "mall" to shop for my mom and brother for christmas. Wat...

Re: Does anyone like the Allman bros?
i heard an interview with i think the drummer from the allman bros. kid - new hotshot guitar player - sounds like a cool kid... Mike The "hot shot" guitar player is Derek Trucks and it's his uncle that plays drums on the right in the band. Derek also has a solo album out. I like it, but that's my o...

Re: Micing the drum kit...proposed setup
here's my suggestion. . . *SM57 above the drumers head (maybe 12-18 inches above) pointed at the snare/hihats *The beta on the kick That's it. Worked really cool on some songs I did. . . Of course, it worked really well in my live room, through my soundcraft board into protools at 24/44.1. . .I don'...

Re: Compress Sax? while tracking or mixng?
the professors' ideas are very good. I'll have to try that :-) As a sax player, myself, and have been recording myself over the last 3 years, I have yet to put any compression going to tape. But, I like pushing the meters on the old ampex mm1100. The mic I use for this app is a gefell with an m70 ca...

Re: I just don't get it (happy accidents)
I don't know if this is an accident, per say, but last summer when my band was practicing, I mic'ed up the instruments with a e609 on the kick and a SM57 just placed hap=hazardly ubove the set; a pro25 on the bass cabinet, a e602 on the guitar and an at35 on the bell of the sax. We recorded, just so...
