what gear were you using? (e.g. software, preamps, interface, etc.) The interface is a Mackie 1202 Onyx with Firewire, recorded with Logic, and I used the built-in preamps. Vocals were recorded with the MXL 990, and my Squier bass was DIed and I used the built-in Logic bass amp modeler. Drums were ...

+1...I'm hoping to do the same soon and I hope it comes out this good. Post an update when you record the guitar. I'd like to hear it. The trickiest part was the drums. I had only three microphones to work with, since my guitarist didn't come over that day (which is why there's no guitar) and he ha...

My very first attempt at recording my full band
I'm semi-new to recording, and I've had some experience recording myself and helping others out in a studio, but I wanted to know what you guys thought of my first attempt at a full-band recording with my own gear entirely. My band is deciding if I have the abilities to create a 5 song demo CD (we'r...

Joel, iMacs are great. But the deal you posted is far worse than this one: http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB417LL/A?mco=MTA4MzIzNTI Much faster, directly from Apple, same warranty, more RAM, etc. I have purchased many refurbished Macs directly from the Apple store for friends and family and have ...

Not super cheap at $99 but you can download a 30 day trial to test it out.

Couldn't you just put a mono mix through the headphones for a phase check? Seems easier in every way. Yes, but checking for phase issues while retaining a "stereo image" is more desirable for me. I do press the mono button on Logic quite often (which I should when I'm dealing with a lot of ridiculo...

Speaker emulated headphone monitoring?
Hi all. I'm one of those college-student project studio types. I do believe I make some more-than-adequate mixes, however I had a question regarding monitoring. Since I am poor, I made the silly decision of buying monitors (Yamaha HS50m) before actually acoustically treating my bedroom. I have, howe...

When I worked at a studio, the main engineer had those basic deposit rules. However, interestingly enough, he did not want rappers (not that there are any rappers in Davis, CA javascript:emoticon('')) since they would swear in front of his children. Heavy drinking however was almost encourage...

I'm at work so it'll have to wait...unless anyone else has a similar story with a different issue.

Tascam 688 issue
I was lucky enough to score a Tascam 688 for $100 on Craigslist. All the 10 channels work, the midi functions work (not that I use them, but I tried), and it sounds fine. The problem is, when recording or playing, after 10 seconds, it will just simply stop. The machine doesn't turn off, it's just as...

I'm more than happy with the sound my 688 provides. I'm still baffled at how Tascam could make an 8-track cassette sound as good as they did. I use a Mackie Onyx 1220 to dump the tracks via Firewire. From what I can tell it sounds transparent enough, and maintains the analog warmth and "mid-fi" (sor...
