Sorry farview, but sampling rate is the number of times each second that the incoming signal is measured. Does a higher rate translate to a higher maximum recordable frequency? Yes, of course it does. Does it also mean a more accurate measurement of everything else? Yes, of course it does. If I'm re...

Oh, and one other side bit about high sample rates... they aren't just for recording high frequencies you know... everything is captured more accurately. Consider that at 44.1k, a 440Hz wave is measured about 100 times per wave cycle. That might seem like plenty of measurements, but then consider th...

These discussions do go around and around all the time, and the same wives tales, misinterpretations, and confusions abound. I am a proponent of higher sampling rates, even if I can't hear the difference. That might seem an odd statement, but honestly I really don't feel like trying to set up blind ...

Well I'm going to be different and mention that I've captured some really nice timpani sound with ribbon mics about 8-12 inches above the head the way I would mic nice-sounding toms. Of course, it's important that the drums actually sound good, that they be in tune, and that the player know how timp...

And you know, I just looked at the original photo up there again and noticed that is a Sabra Som stereo bar... That means the locations of the 5/8" mounting studs are flexible, they can slide across the bar... That means the engineer who set it up could have moved the mics close enough to get a 90? ...

Yep, it's the Sony PCM D1 and it's been out almost two years as an all-in-one field recorder.
Can't say that I've used one, but I can say that they carry a pretty substantial price tag.

Just for the record, I more often refer to myself as a "recovering musician"... and oddly enough, everyone from the music faculty down the hall to the waitress at a truckstop diner seems to understand exactly what that means. (Or at least they form their own interpretation pretty quick.) I was once ...

Ah, another common bit of confusion - the capsules don't need to be stacked one above the other, just as close as possible. When I demonstrate how we can configure a coincident pair, I hold up two coins and say, 'how many ways can I configure this into a 90? angle with both coins as close as possibl...

I have to say that I really like the shock mount that AKG makes for the 414 that was included with the stereo pair kit. I'm not sure if it's still the same mount for the new XLS series mics, but the one that went with the last versions of the B-ULS mics have been great. I put the mics in there as in...

My first guess is that someone thought they were setting up an XY pair, and didn't know that the "textbook" setup would be capsules as close together as possible with a 90? included angle. My second guess would be that since the mics happen to be Oktavas which are very short, that they couldn't get ...

Remember that not all old things age the same way. Is that 30-year old 421 going to be something that spent 20 years in front of a chain-smoking radio DJ, or being thrashed on stage in a bar, or being tenderly loved in a clean & climate-controlled studio? Now ultimately any old 421 you buy will soun...

Those seem at first glance to be compelling arguments - and certainly they've been around for a long time. But let's consider them without naming brands and models and just as concepts. First, the idea of 'the end listener is using crap, so I should too.' Yeah, maybe that's more severe than what Bri...

I'd second the idea that you've already answwered your question. When we say we want "flat" speakers in the studio, we mean frequency response, not that we want them to be dull and lifeless. And if those EVs are unpleasant to listen to, then it's more likely that they aren't a flat response speaker,...

When I first started learning more about recording and became interested in the idea of becoming an audio engineer, I was lucky enough to have a few good ideas come my way from articles, books, people, etc. - One is the notion that 'we are supposed to be engineers ' and are supposed to know how our ...
