I dunno. i've always had a lot of respect, but mixed feelings about Bruce- I think it's a geographical thing as I grew up in the New Jersey tristate area. As big as you all think he was in 1984, quadruple it for that part of the country. I mean, it was like the messiah had arrived and that was, what...

Well, my solo CD of mostly home recorded 1/2" 8 track stuff will be available in 3 weeks and then we can see just how charming it is.

Actually, I think you'll fiond that all the string manufacturers still sell flatwound bass strings and a lot of people use them - certainly any pro session player usually shows up with one bass with flats for recording.

I've always had a deep desire for a nice old Gibson acoustic- a Hummingbird or J-200 or somthing- but "Wildflowers" got me all Martin-ed up for sure. I think, from the photos I've seen, those tracks were done with very nice German mics. I personally love the sound of a Beta 57 on acoustic.

Is there any info anywhere on the net about how they recorded the acoustic guitars on "Wildflowers" by Tom Petty? That' s the benchmark of great modern acoustic rock to my ears.

One has to assume that Peter Gabriel still has one somewhere in a wearhouse on the East Coast.

hear hear on the muting. Or is it here here? Anyway, palm muting is a key part of my bass style and it really helps in recording. Also, I almost always find that flatwound strings help in recording. They aren't aproppriate for everything, of course, but at least they give you a good starting point.

This is obvious as hell, but just in case it's helpful to someone: a really nice thing to do with doubled vocals is to use different mics. It's always a temptaion to do the double right away and use the same setup, but if i do a lead on a really rich sounding mic through a nice pre, i'll do the doub...

oofa. $100? Really socking it to your fellow Fabs geeks, don't you think? Must be awfully expensive paper or something. Somehow i feel slightly dirty and used already.

I have a multivox Full Rotor which sounds great and, I'm happy to say, I got for $10 at a flea market and have since seen in several stores for $300 or more. It really does sound great, though. I used it on the backwards solo on the "File Me" song on my 8 track stuff (link below). http://www.bostong...

Really? The 610 has EQ points. I assume you have a GT Brick and love it, but what makes it so much better that that little blue Bellari tube pre that I bought for $99 and never use?

Does the brick have an XLR input? Would it be a good portable mic pre?

laptop/ M Box port question

I'm getting ready to buy a laptop so that I can do some recording away from the house with M Box. I'm all mac these days, so it'll probably be an iBook. I've never owned a laptop of any kind before, so any advice there is welcome. I don't have an unlimited budget, but it's a work-related expense and...

I can certainly see resenting someone who tampers with your song a year after you record it, but in the case of "Sound Of silence", that album had been out, bombed and they ahd broken up and it was only because of the folk rock boom (kick started by "Like A Rolling Stone) that Columbia had Tom Wilso...

If you want to hear a Tom Wilson rave, e-mail Al Kooper. He reckons Tom was just about the coolest cat he ever worked with. He is kind of single handedely responsible for Al's career, though. He's the one that didn't kick him out of the studio when Al started messing around on the Hammond during "Li...
