The gain stuff is needed because I am often tracking into amps with wildly different gain structures, and I'd like to avoid having to throw another link in the chain (i.e. a clean boost) here or there.

Mainly parts and wiring that are non-project-specific. I tend to get pretty Frankenstein with gear. Hence I end up with plenty of defunct equipment that can be pillaged.
