Re: dark condensers on the cheap for high SPLs
The X1D is a killer tom mic. SE is insane for discontinuing them. I liked them so much, I bought eight of them. I use them for all kinds of stuff. Anyway, they're not as inexpensive, but the Audio Technica 4047 sounds a lot like the X1D on toms. Makes sense, since they're both kinda based on the FET...

Re: Limiter on rough mixes
I set it to threshhold of -1.0 dB, and an output of -0.2 dB. I do a similar thing for the same reasons. My user default on my "loudness limiter" plugin is Boz Labs' "The Wall" with the threshold starting at -01 and the output at -01. I adjust the threshold from there. I don't use it all the time, b...

Re: Bass Plugins
Agreed! Not usually my choice for bass, but a really great alternative to Decapitator in general.Recycled_Brains wrote: ↑Tue Nov 05, 2019 8:42 amI think the Soundtoys Radiator is pretty cool too, but not nearly as flexible.
I wish they'd get back to developing some more stuff. Everything they make is SO good!

Re: Bass Plugins
I usually recording bass via DI these days and aside from general EQ and compression, I'm often applying a bit of distortion via a plugin to get a little bit of "life" that helps the bass cut through a rock track. Nine times out of ten, I'm using the amazing SoundToys Decapitator, which is useful on...

Re: Advice on next steps to move setup forward
Be aware that if you want a console, but you also don't want something you're going to have to do maintenance work on, your best option is going to be something new or something recently restored. Any console over ten or fifteen years old is going to need frequent cleaning of switches and pots and e...

Re: Hardware Compressors for vocals on a budget
If replacing the mixer isn't an option, I'd be looking heavily at the FMR RNC. Those are great-sounding, very flexible stereo compressors that cost less than $100 per channel.

Re: electrovoice 635A
I've had two of them for years. I love the way that they're sort of non-detailed, have no extended top or bottom, can take a good amount of level, and still sound okay. That makes them perfect for stuff where you don't really need "hi fi," but you may not necessarily want "lo fi." I use mine frequen...

Re: Searching for Best Studios in Boston, MA and/or Surrounding Locations
I was hired to do a cast recording of a musical that was happening up there. We were looking specifically for a place with a good grand piano and decent isolation options. I have a bunch of friends in Boston and knew a bunch of the studios up there and Wellspring seemed like a good fit. I'm also a b...

Re: Searching for Best Studios in Boston, MA and/or Surrounding Locations
I had a good experience spending a week at Wellspring out in Acton a few years back. It's a funky sort of place-- pretty bohemian and vibey. Not the cleanest, slickest studio I've ever been in, but it was pretty great. Good-sounding, fairly large live room, several isolation options, and (at the tim...

Re: Mixing with the band there
I always like having someone there. It's saved my ass SO MANY TIMES. These days, I do like to get the bulk of stuff going for a few hours before they come in, but almost without fail, if I work with the background vocal balanced right up with the lead vocal, the band wants the background vocal almos...

Re: Oktava mk 012 hypercardioid capsules
It's been a long time since I've done a comparison, but from my recollection, the bleed control is noticeable with the hyper caps. Once I got a few of those, I just started using them on toms all the time until the ATM 450s came out. The ease of placing the 450s around cymbals made them more useful ...

Re: 500 series racks - how much power do I need?
The Buzz Elixirs (which I love) are a good test for this. They draw A LOT of current. I'm surprised at how many manufacturers say this won't be an issue and then either one of the units won't work or there will be a hum or something. That said, the Purple Sweet Ten is super-solid, dead quiet, built ...

Re: Printing An Effect To Its Own Tape Track
I do this a lot, especially with vocals. The only time it's an issue is when I wind up doing something weird to the original track in the mix where the printed reverb then sounds REALLY different from the source. Otherwise, it works like a charm. But IF you had the separate source tracks, you could ...
