Re: silly studio expressions

I do mostly TV commercial work, I have a client that constantly asks me to turn stuff up a"quarter dB". I know what he really wants is around a 4db bump, but if he sees me jack it up he says....no..no..no just a quarter dB. I do that around 12 times and he says "perfect". I'm glad I charge by the ho...

Re: shrink tubing for grounds/drains

rather than use shrink tubing, there's this stuff out there that's made out of teflon that I use. You buy the proper gauge you need, and just slip it over the bare wire. Thing is, though, you have to trim it back properly so there is bare wire going into that ADC punchblock hole. The teflon stuff d...

Re: How many songs? How Long?

My band went in and did 12 songs in 2 days,3 days for over dubs. We created one of the biggest piles of shit I have ever heard. Why? Because they thought more songs done is better than a few done well. I think 3 songs in 8 hours for basic tracks is a good estimate, grouping songs you want to have th...

Benchmark MP-3 preamp module

I found a bag full of these pre-amp modules at work. Does anyone know what kind of sound these pre's have. I have around 20 of them, but I would
have to get some sort of power supply to find out what they sound like.

Re: Night Ranger vs. Triumph vs. Zebra vs. Journey vs. ...

I would automatically add boston and foreigner to any list that featured journey. It would be cool to make a greatest hits collection of all their well, greatest hits and sell it on TV to contractors. Tired of classic rock radio that just doesnt deliver enough of the hits that you love? Screw, sand...

Re: U2 (aka Bono vs. Toto)

Here's an old George Harrison quote about U2: "You know what irritates me about modern music, it's all based on ego. Look at a group like U2. BONO and his band are so egocentric... The more you jump around, the bigger your hat is, the more people listen to your music... The only important thing is ...

Re: lap steel vs. pedal steel

I never would have guessed that all my knob-twister friends were so steel friendly. There is an archived performance where I played pedal steel on a local radio show that has a video stream if you're interested at: http://kcrw.com/smil/mb031113Mojave_3.ram No making fun of my posture alright? I'm s...

Re: Shure Level Loc MP3 Comparison

It's tough 'cause I'm just listening with a computer, but the Level Loc at 6' sounds pretty damn good to me. It has a more midrange"clang" to it that I kinda like on the Acoustic(good for Stonesesque stuff). The other track is a more even sound tonewise. I really hear the shakey sound of the Shure un...

Re: Sound for film

I work in sound for TV, but it's pretty much the same as film. There is a little more info than I can give you in an e-mail but here is a little basic stuff. Most dialog is recorded with an overhead mic on a boom pole. The mic of choice usually is a Sennhieser 416 or another hypercardiod shotgun. Th...

Re: Overdrive Pedal

Most OD's sound best when your amp is turned up to that point just below break up. If your trying to keep the volume down to apease your neighbors this probably won't work for you. I agree that the SansAmp or Pod might be a better answer to getting a decent tone to tape with "bedroom" levels. Otherw...

Re: producer, dick, messiah

From an artists perspective I am always looking for ways to make my song more complete. Sometimes out of laziness or loss of creative "spark" I call a song done and ready to record. I really look for a producer to be honest with me and either come up with something to help the song out, or send me b...
