AudioXpress is HiFi DIY. It's pretty down to earth as far as hifi goes, but when they say "preamp," they mean something you'd use to hook up a turntable. There's some decent theory and conceptual stuff there (I'm sorta a disciple of Nelson Pass, a regular contributor), but not buckets of studio or m...

Something's not right at mouser. In the page you linked to, it says "Precision Joysticks 2.0-6.0W 10Kohms 20%," but if I click there for the datasheet, it takes me to a datasheet for a stick with switches... You have a new stick with pots, right? Are you familiar with Ohm's Law? This is a great plac...

That's right, the easiest way to disable the EQ would be to wire a switch so that the LCR network was either connected to the wiper of the pot, or was shorted to ground, and the wiper left unconncected. You could use a switch per band, or a multipole switch to do all 3 at once. One toggle switch you...

Try searching for "RIAA preamp schematic" and you'll turn things up.
Here are a few from sources that are pretty reliable:

If you poke around Shure's web site, you can find the schem in their discontinured manuals section. It's from that lovely era when the schem was part of the users manual. Here's a schem, I'm not sure if it's entirely correct for the Sherlock: http://www.freeinfosociety.com/electronics/schematics/aud...

It should be mentioned that the current rating of the wall-wart will play a factor here, too. As the load demands more current, the output voltage of the transformer will drop. That link says it wants 200 mA from the secondary, which is often how those wall warts are rated (ie: "200mA @ 24V"). If th...

3 terminals on/on Yup. It should be a SPDT (single-pole, double throw) switch. You could also use just one side of a DPDT switch. So, just to confirm, the middle position and one of the sides of the switch will both be connected to the side of R47 that isn't grounded. This would be the eq "on" posi...

How do you feel about the bypass taking the HP filter out, too? You might give this a try (IE: prototype it on one strip, and then if it's working, try it on other strips). Wire a SPDT switch in like this: One end to the - leg of C9. The middle to the top of the fader (R47). The other end to the dow...

So Jon, What are you looking for in an EQ? There are tons of options around. What features do you want, and at what price? You can build the filters from a Pultec point-to-point, and then follow them with an opamp for makeup gain. That saves cash on the tubes and transformers. It won't be a super-ex...

First, is the input to the Mackie balanced? Second, do you have a multimeter? I'd check two things: 1> that each connection you expect to be there is there (tip to pin 2, ring to 3, sleeve to 1) 2> that there are no connections you don't expect (ie: shorts from one pin to another) Don't sweat the ov...

While it makes some amount of intuitive sense, it's largely untrue. A couple of reasons: - A larger capacity hard drive isn't physically any larger than a smaller one, usually. So the data is actually written more densely onto the platters. Thus, the mechanical stuff doesn't need to move as far to g...
