Re: when recording a wurlitzer electric piano...?

Speaking of tuning--anyone know who in the Chicago area might be able to tune a Wurlitzer?

Re: TRON

Journey were a great band, yes, but "Oh Sherrie" is solo Steve Perry, not Journey.

And I know that Journey came up because of the "Escape" video game, but IIRC there's a Journey song (it may be "Any Way You Want It") playing in the arcade Jeff Bridges goes into at the beginning of "Tron."

Re: making a "BORING" album

Sure you can make a good record with limited gear. Happens all the time. Conversely, it's definitely possible to make a boring record with millions of dollars and every kind of mic ever made. Change what you can to make it interesting-- if you've only got the one mic, change the placement. Change th...

Re: I just saw Radiohead live in St. Louis.

I had lawn tickets. Pavilion sold out by time I got tix. Sound was okay but visibility sucked--luckily they had several video screens showing different views.

Re: faking mic distance, post-tracking?

Perhaps he's of the Billy Joel "you can't dress trashy 'til you spend a lot of money" mindset, meaning lo-fi goes over well if you're on a major label or something but if you're not, you just sound like you're broke or don't know what you're doing.

Just a thought.

Re: 2" 16-track vs Pro Tools HD

Wow, that does suck. Can you get ahold of the hi-res files--maybe take a hard drive over to the guy's place and copy 'em? Or is there no other access to a system that can use the hi-res files? Maybe the band can approach it more as "we want to make sure we have a copy of our multitracks for future r...

Hey, good luck with the band audition!

This has been a good thread--and you're right; had it been Cubase/Nuendo I wouldn't have participated, as I don't use those programs. Hope I haven't been too snarky.

Re: Everything new is old again

Love the Kraftwerk/Orb story...reminds me of standing at the Nine Inch Nails/David Bowie show in Chicago, during Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World," and overhearing a sixteen-year-old girl ask her friend, "why is David Bowie singing a Nirvana song?" AAARGH! Someone call the Cover Cops! (to make ma...

Re: Why do you like protools so much?

otto: Fair enough. I'll give you that MIDI is pretty lacking on PT, but the timestretch is good, plus the Serato Pitch'n'Time plug for PT is great. There's a few feet of space between "it oughta be all you need for that price and it isn't" and "edits...[is] ALL it does well." Okay, so PT isn't an al...

Re: Why do you like protools so much?

silversound: a) again, please clarify your question re: innovation. I think Joel has good points about this, regardless of PT vs. analog or PT vs. other softwares. 2) I haven't really seen very many people in this thread coming up with specifics about why their software of choice is better than PT, ...

Re: Clean and Pristine

I always think of the Police records as being pretty clean. Paul Simon's "Graceland" as well. Olivia Newton-John's "Don't Stop Believin'" album is a pretty pristine, open recording, with none of the claustrophobic sound lots of rock records had at that time (1976). The first Wilson Phillips record--...

Re: Songwriting

Interesting questions, inverseroom. I have on occasion found myself stuck because a song isn't quite done; sometimes it's the client and sometimes it's me. I'm never quite sure how to steer the songwriter if it's a client, and damn I'm stuck if I'M the writer...I think, though, that the question of ...

Re: Micing that SAW!!

I had to mic a saw back in college...it's been wahile, but I think what we did was move the mic back a couple of feet to let the lower tones develop and just moved it 'round a bit until we found a sweet spot. Depends on the player, too. this guy had a nice, sweet tone. I think we used an SM91.
