Re: 'Undiscovered' tube amps

Gotta disagree with TN MASTR about that silvertone being the only good one--my piggyback Silvertone 1484 is absolutely gorgeous-sounding, both through its 2x12 cabinet and through a Marshall 4x12 slant. Great warmth AND more shiny high end than you can shake a stick at. Plus, you can turn the main v...

Re: Why do you like protools so much?

IIRC ProTools6 now has a built-in click. You used to have to generate it (and there was a feature for that) by sending MIDI out to a drum machine (or whatever).

Re: Razor edits?

The reference to looking all over the place for a single word on a scrap of tape was mine. To clarify: Way back in the Before Time, we used to record dialog for commercials/narration for industrials etc. to 1/4" tape and then edit a master take together before laying it in to the 2" to add music, ef...

Re: Jandek & 'outsider' music (Rock over London,Rock on

"You painted your teeth and you think you're find but you gotta die." Marvelous. I was introduced to the music of Jandek and Skip Spence a couple of years ago by C.P., my collaborator in Donny Who Loved Bowling. Both of those artists were moderately influential on us as we made our first CD. I have ...

Re: What Digital editing has Done to my Brain...

Then there's the old industry story of the engineer who took all the breaths out of a Barbra Streisand vocal (and this was on analog tape in the '70s) and was told to put them all back in as Babs thought it ruined the feel of the vocal. And yeah, the "Bono Exhale" is such a signature part of his sou...

Re: Why do you like protools so much?

Looks like you've answered your own question: don't go ragging on Pro Tools for some engineer and band's abuse of it. You see the same argument about automated consoles-there are "manual mix" purists who say over-use of automation kills...something...about music mixes. Come on! Anyone can overuse a ...

Re: pricing industrials

Oh yeah, retirement videos, benefits videos--I've done all that stuff. I once did a training tape for Russian immigrants taking the United States citizenship exam that was an hour long, in Russian and English. I've said it before in this forum: music recording is great and fun and why most of us got...

Re: Why do you like protools so much?

ottokbre--what was it about this session that put you off? Was it endless comping of takes on PT? Seems to me that session would have been just as tedious punching-in one phrase at a time on analog or making a comp vocal from 3-4 parallel passes on a multitrack. Was it the fact that ProTools was the...

Re: pricing industrials

As far as rental vs. buy-out music pricing, you may want to investigate what companies like Killer Tracks and FirstCom and NonStop Music charge--they're "needle-drop" libraries of music used for ads, industrials, movie trailers etc. ("needle-drop" is a term from the days when such libraries were dis...

re: th standard. I agree with friendlybunny--ten years ago I stayed at a job I didn't like long enough to learn Sonic Solutions, because I knew I'd be more marketable if I knew the software than if I didn't--and I was right. Being one of the only guys in town who knew Sonic in the mid-90s got me lot...

Re: mixing in the box? duh? or huh?

I record: At work--radio commercials, TV ads, movies, rock music and experimental music. I use a ProTools Mix3 system with a Control|24 control surface. So while I am mixing in the box I have physical faders to touch, which I like as my previous life was all consoles. Before the ProTools system we h...

Re: Why do you like protools so much?

Sure, but to an extent you're stuck to the hardware of any format you commit to record on. I once spent two months tracking down a working 1/2" 16-track to finish some mixes a band had started at a college studio to which they no longer had access. And of course the studio I found had no other forma...

Re: London Calling engineering notes and kick drums

Interesting, btw, to see the description of the gated snare process on the Clash record. I've usually seen the development of this technique credited to Phil Collins in the early '80s.
