There's nothing to be gained (pun intended) by turning up the gain on the Firepod, unless you're going for nasty solid state distortion.

Let the P2 do the heavy lifting.

S, D, and G stand for Source, Drain, and Gate. You will find these on FET's (Field Effect Transistors).

They are analogous to the Emitter, Collector, and Base on a standard bipolar transistor.

Hah. The classic "Dead Air" dream. Curt, you haven't lived until it's _actually happened to you_. (Can anybody say-- bathroom really far from control room?) GJ Oh, it's happened, trust me! I'd be in the can, or the production room, or just not paying attention.... When I worked overnights at this p...

I used to have this recurring nightmare back when I was a radio announcer; and it even popped up once in a while after I left that job. I'd be sitting in the control room. It would be 30 seconds to news time at the top of the hour. I'd have no copy, the cart decks (this gives you an idea of how long...

Re: The etiquette of the jam

Is it OK to be pissed when he unplugs pedals from my amp without saying so, such that when we switch instruments I suddenly don't have my lead gain and reverb? Should I change my name to Keef van Felix "Monk" Unger ? No, you should beat him to an unrecognizable pulp with the nearest mic s...

Bear in mind that no room is perfect, and most rooms built by amateurs like us* are going to have some issues when measured against objective standards. That said, if the music you make in your room translates well to other spaces, then proceed with confidence. If it sounds good, it is good. Is it p...

I disagree, I think it might drive more work. An app like that in the privacy of someone's home without other people to judge them unless they choose to post it could boost their confidence as a singer, possibly to the point of taking themselves seriously enough to seek making a record with musicia...

The biggest thing you can do is go where your potential clients are. Get to know them. Get some business cards made (nothing fancy) and hand them out.

I've noticed the same thing in the broadcast engineering field. Hardly any women, and the few there are usually work in a support role (i.e. answering the phone at the transmitter factory). It's not as if it's some "boys club." But the hours are insane, the work is sometimes dirty, and high heels ar...

I had heard that the amount of over-bias depended on what brand of tape you were using. For example, Ampex 456 liked to have 3dB overbias.

I suppose if you ask four other guys, you'll get four other answers. (And I wouldn't be shocked if one or two were better than mine!)

Unless there's absolutely no way to avoid it, I would recommend against going into debt to pay for school. (Insert gasps here.) You'll finish school in debt. Sure the payment is only a hundred and change a month, but that's a hundred and change a month you'll have to come up with whether you're work...

In my experience, unless the place was built from the ground up to be soundproof, it will never be completely soundproof. As far as acoustic treatments to deal with echoes, standing waves, etc., some inexpensive, easy to use panels can be built. These can be hung on the walls much the way you'd hang...
