Tons of good advice about P-basses and the choice of flatwound strings for a vintage, Motown-like tone. My suggestions include to try regular light-gauge flatwound strings, no fancy "chrome" or alloy types. The best thing that you can do for the bass is to have it professionally set up with your cho...

For $300? Maybe buy some things that you don't have now. Apex 205 ribbon mic for miking guitar amps (by itself or along with a condenser or 57) or as the side mic in front of your acoustic drum kit along with a condenser for mid-side stereo miking? A good direct box, like the Radial Pro DI? Maybe st...

Although the rooms at Electrical have a unique sound, the roomy drum sound is more dependent on the engineer (Albini) and how the mics are placed. Nirvana's In Utero recordings predate the current Electrical studios and a recent 2012 recording by Polish band Joe 4, recorded in a European studio by A...

For the R8, you should use 1.0mil thick tape like RMGI LPR-35. Less wear on the tape heads and motor.

Try fullcompass.com and usrecordingmedia.com for tape sources as well. New tape prices continue to increase.

I was not so interested in how his miking techniques looked, more into the timeloop mp3 and how the mic techniques sounded on the drum kit he was recording.

So I checked this out. Pretty cool. One note though - I know there is no right or wrong way to do things really when recording and if it sounds good then it is - but I was always under the impression that when you did an XY the capsules were supposed to point away from one another and not toward as...

Colour Modular Analog Saturator

DIY Recording Equipment has posted this new product on their website. An analog saturator with room for three different color modules in 500 series format. Looks interesting.

Comparing drum miking techniques

I was browsing over at recordinghacks.com and found this article again by Matthew McGlynn: http://recordinghacks.com/2010/04/03/drum-overhead-microphone-technique-comparison/. It is a good description of various overhead drum miking techniques and the timeloop mp3 ( http://recordinghacks.com/sounds/...

Referring to the GAP Pre 573, there may be an issue with running more than one unit in a Lindell 506 500 series rack. There was a recent thread on Gearslutz referring to the start-up current draw of the Pre 573 causing issues with the Lindell 506's switching power supply. The API racks with their li...

I certainly understand why you'd ship the card to the Westside. People living in other places cannot fathom how difficult freeway driving can be here in LA. Traffic is bad even on weekends. Thanks for understanding. We should be grateful to have ONE authorized AVID repair location available in LA. ...

You can try here: http://www.advancedmusical.com/ Not far south from SFV, in West LA. Yep thanks. I know they're the only Avid approved repair shop ... kinda crazy that there's only ONE here in LA. I might end up shipping my card to them rather than head over the hill. And folks don't make fun unle...
