most two-way monitor's acoustic axis is exactly in between the tweeter and the bass driver. there's specs for these at most manufacturer's sites, at for the better ones who might actually give a fuck about publishing such a thing. I knew it! Thanks, that makes me feel better. I would have kept moni...

If it works for you, don't question it. Thanks Tony! I know, I know, that's my whole realm of thought ALWAYS, though sometimes it's easy to question the methods to your madness and you just need some reassurance, and that's when I turn you fine folks ;) Picking up a BeyerDynamic M88 soon, I know yo...

Monitoring In The "Sweet Spot"

I just grabbed a used set of B&W Matrix 805's, (Adcom GFA-555 poweramp), and despite reading mostly that one should monitor with their ears aligned with the tweeters, I find that the music sounds the most full, euphoric, in-phase and most-even across the frequency spectrum when my ears are above the...

EV PG20/RE20, Rode NTK Tube LDC, Ashly SC-50 Compressor

EV PG20/RE20 - $175 We got it from a client a while back for around $200 because he said that he took it apart to replace the foam, (which is brand new, btw), and that he may have wired it back up wrong, it sounds a bit thin and I can hear a wire tapping the diaphragm with I shake it, don't have ti...

Just making sure you hit all things on this checklist: -Arming the desired track, (try any track 2-7 to start off with) -Check the "Meter" button to make sure it's in the correct position, (I forget which one) -Make sure you have "Stereo" or whatever selected on the lower far right side of the unit,...

You heard it here first folks,, lately I've been singing into the side-vents on the old EV Variable-D mics, (RE-10/16 or other). No joke. Super silky and smooth yet pronounced that's perfect for bk vox, rounded-off doubles or getting an old Bing Crosby vibe on a characterful lead vocal that sounds g...

You need a nice LDC,, and a nice pre. I won't reveal what killer bang-for-your-buck mic I would suggest because I'm currently in the market, but might I suggest a used Hamptone JFET or tube pre for around $650, they capture tracks that are way stackable during mixdown, everything will sound big and ...

Have you considering maxing the CRAP out of an old tape reel-to-reel, cassette, or even microcassette recorder? Slam that shat son!

If you don't need them to be linked together, (though you probably do), then you may want to consider getting two Symetrix 528's, 1U each and no filters but they're totally road-worthy, very musical, fairly inexpensive and also includes a usable comp, expander, preamp and de-ess, all of which are in...

I wouldn't even USE a comp for what you're describing,, I would just max the CRAP out of the piece of fear that was closest within arm's reach.

+9 on the Fostex MN-50, (sometimes labeled MN-15),, IF you can find one. Runs on a 9 volt? Mash 4 tracks down simultaneously? Squishy and characterful? You bet 'cha. ;) Fyi, the "Stereo Rackmount" version of the Dynacomp is called MXR 136 Dual Limiter I think. I actually have an ad up for an Ashly S...

What kind of music are you recording?

If by any chance you are doing eclectic or singer/songwriter-type stuff or anything without a lot of drums, you'd be crazy not to grab a Tascam 388 if you're on a budget, even a unit with a broken reel-to-reel section for stupid cheap.

Be sure to use the XLR out ONLY on the EH12ay7, as it passes through the extra special circuitry.

Z-Vex Super Hard On, schems all over the web, or you can give a pioneer some money... the vextor version isn't as expensive. Then drive your favorite fuzz with it plugged into a silverface Fender, now there's some sparkle! That sounds like an EXCELLENT clean, INXS type of sound, (already a huge fan...
