I have a d12e (a d12 with an xlr) and it certainly has lows -- but whether the peak is around 100-150 or at 60-80, I couldn't say. Sounds good on big boomy hand drums, where what you want is the boom. Never liked it as the only kick mic, but works well on batter side with a 421 in front, stuck in t...

Yeah, I end up losing an issue almost every year... Hope this isn't too on-topic but I absolutely loved the Steve Albini interview myself. Truth be told I've never totally dug the guy's sounds (though he's made some of my favorite records) but damn if he's just not the coolest dude in the world. And...

agree!

Really useful controls, tap tempo, wide range of speeds, no noise, pretty transparent and built like a tank. I love mine.

The way I think of it, VCAs derive their "transparency" from their speed and agility. They act quickly to reduce peaks. Optos derive their transparency by saturating somewhat. (this is sound-wise, to my ears - I'm not professing to offer a technical description) In other words, a peak is reduced, ye...

The Drawmer gates are pretty standard - plenty of flexibility in controls and precision in sound. on a completely different tip, I've always really like the Valley People gates - either the standalone ones or the ones in the Dynamite. When you want something raucous, sloppy, and nasty (in a really a...

I forgot to say, if budget is a concern, you might try checking out the Sebatron preamps. It's kind of of the same vibe as the 610, though altogether a bit of a step down. It's got a similar harmonic richness but can be a little limp sounding at times... I don't know how to say it exactly - it lacks...

Re: UA 2-610 and other colored pres - opinions?

I can't seem to find many opinions regarding these.. Really? They've been around a long time and are quite popular. If you're not seeing a lot of stuff specifically saying "2-610S" you should know that the original 2-610 and M610 are essentially the same thing, with the S version having a pad and I...

graphic EQs - talk about the uncoolest pieces of gear around (possibly tied with gates). I remember a friend was redoing one of his rooms probably 10 years back and offered me two big old silver UREI graphics that he didn't need anymore - and I passed! :hammer: (they're both me) I've owned a couple ...

not looking to join or boycott any beatdowns per se, but: what did you really expect? If you haven't HEARD the difference in 20 years, then it must not amount to a whole lot - aside of principle - and I'm with you in that respect. But in that case, you already know the guy's an asshole, or A**H*** i...

Topic: getting the bass guitar mix to translate to small speakers

The reason I say that is it's not just how those little speakers represent bass but also the ways in which they tend to allow other elements in the mix to mask it. Interesting... Maybe I can clarify a little... When you solo the bass through small speakers, when you have a situation where it's not ...

One thing I have found myself doing is, in order to really begin internalizing the subtleties (and non-subtleties) of how those small speakers interact with the sound is to actually start my mixes on them, and only then move to proper monitors. I bet if you make that a habit for a while you'll begin...

actually all the velvet-draped studios I've spent any time in have been overseas... couple on the continent, one on the Isle of Wight actually, several in Scandinavia including a velvet-draped mobile rig. I was just about to go on about how the RE20 is just a way better mic. The two don't even really compare. What Imaginary Cat said is right on. You can take an RE20 and some EQ and get pretty close to anything you could get out of a D12, but not the other way around. If it was still in production tod...

Thanks for the responses, and for the links Gregg. I had originally posted from my phone and now that I'm in front of an actual computer with a full size monitor and keyboard and a real internet connection I've tracked down the manual for the actual meter in question. My original question was twofol...
