Re: Vintage Ampex 1" 8-track...

500 bucks? I would have a very hard time saying no to that. Is it in LA? C'mon, c'mon, you can tell me. No, seriously...I very much want a 1/2" 4-track myself, but my understanding is that old Ampex machines do require you to know enough about electronics to keep them running. And I know absolutely ...

Re: Quantegy closes its doors

I dunno about it being an ideology kind of thing, like 'which is better?'--which I couldn't care less about. The thing that bugs me is the idea that digital has somehow replaced analog--the whole smug, condescending 'progress' argument that I see thrown around here. I always thought that both format...

Re: Quantegy closes its doors

When all these old-timers who refuse to switch to digital run out of tape and decide that they'd rather retire than record to hard disk - well at least there will finally be some decent job openings in this industry. Oh man, ALL of us have thought things like this, even if we'd never say it out lou...

Re: Quantegy closes its doors

I dunno about "greatest of the last 5 years," but a bunch came out that I thought were good...um...Yoshimi, "One Beat" by Sleater Kinney, The Junior-Senior album was pretty fun, I think "Low Kick & Hard Bop" by Solex was good, I really like this DC band called Rockmaster General, their record was gr...

Re: Earth opens up and swallows Digidesign whole!

It's preference, not science. ... Don't keep reguritating opinions from several years ago as gospel truth. Yes there were problems with the sound quality of digital, and the same sorts of people who obsessively improved analog tape are now putting their talents into improving digital sound. And if ...

I'll admit he had his moments, but then he was in the 82nd Airborne for more than 20 years. And while Progress might not always please everyone, it is a necessary course for the advancement of civilization. It was after all the pursuit of Progress that brought you tape recording in the first place....

Re: Belle & Sebastian

Bleagh. Compared to their earlier stuff I think it sounds godawful. Really squeaky clean digital gloss, the trumpet sounds like a squeeze toy. The whole thing sounds like a soap commercial to me. I also hate the super-preachiness of the churchy lyrics too.

Re: Otari 8 track question

Wait to see what happens with tape manufacturing. If it continues in some form, by all means buy a tape deck and support whoever's making tape. If it doesn't, or becomes absurdly expensive, you're just wasting money. Don't buy a deck over Ebay, buy locally, especially if you live near NYC. Buying an...

Re: pedal steel suggestions

Not that I'm an expert, but from what I've found the tones on a pedal steel, lap steel, and slide guitar are totally totally different. It's not just a matter of picking what notes to play, but that reedy 2-note harmony thing George does on "My Sweet Lord" will sound way more chimey on a pedal steel...

Re: DIY vinyl lathe cutter?

My wife ordered me one of these for my birthday. The five to six week lead time they reported should be just about up, so hopefully it'll arrive soon. It is a cup and needle system, no electronic ins or outs, and I think it may only play back well on other units like it. But for $40, it should be a...

Re: Your favorite slide guitar solo

Syd Barret, "See Emily Play." Yeah, "Astronomy Dominae" is also good.

I believe that the solo on Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" is slide (might not be, but it kind of sounds like it is) and I love that thing.
