There is a great freeware VST plugin for this kind of thing called sub synth. You can select a variety of harmonic wave forms (sine, distort, divide, etc), as well as the frequency, threshold, decay and mix. Of course it sounds great on kick drums but it can sound really cool dialed in underneath a ...

Mackie d8b and more for sale...
We stumbled on a full Mackie d8b system. It came as an all inclusive deal with some other outboard gear we wanted... we are now selling the rest. I personally don't know much about the specs, but we picked it up in excellent shape and in full working order. According to the previous owner, it is ful...

If you want to really set something "back" in the track try using a short to medium reverb and only use the wet signal... Be sure to reduce the pre delay to zero otherwise it will be off time. In contrast to things with no reverb, this treated track will certainly sound like it is in it's own unique...

If you are seriously considering getting into a 'high end' DI box, then most certainly get a used Avalon U5. New they run 500+ but can be had on ebay for as low as $375 in good if not great condition. Seems people are always selling those things to 'make rent' or because of a change in life prioriti...

Getting some kind of pedal board matrix switcher with all your pedals set up in individual loops is the way to go. The real pro's usually have them custom built and use a programmable midi switcher to engage the particular effects (or combination of effects) they want at any given time. Looks like V...

Yeah, I heard something about Kevin Shields facing two amps together too. But somehow involving aluminum foil.... Sounds like another studio urban legend to me. Confirmed Jim... Steve was actually using a MXR Phase 45. Article here: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/interviews/interviews/the_classic_al...

Anarchy in the UK guitar sound...
Can't remember where I heard it, but years ago I remember reading something about how they recorded Steve Jone's guitar on Anarchy in the UK... Something about putting two fender twins face to face with a mic in the middle. If you listen to the track, it has this swirly, phasey character to it that ...

I'm not necessarily trying to avoid M/S, but always on the lookout for other ways to skin a cat... If you think about it for arguments sake, why not just set up 3 mics and know what the sound is going to be as opposed to doing it with two mics, then doing some offline processing and finding out late...

M/S Recording Alternative?
Just curious if placing one cardiod mic towards your source and placing two omin mics 90 degrees to your source (one left and one right) would yield pretty much the same stereo effect a M/S set up would?
Thoughts?

I don't have any experience recording them but just kicking out ideas... I wonder if connecting a contact mic to the center of the bowl would yield a nice result. If the response is not acceptable there you could try moving it up the wall of the bowl gradually until you got something more acceptable...

Well it won't be as hands on as a full blown workshop but check out some of the things at Izotope: http://izotope.com/products/audio/ozone/ They sell a mastering suite plug-in (which is quite good IMO)... but better you can download their mastering guide for free (at bottom of the page). Obviously i...
