Re: I bought a CD!

Can't remember, but I usually try to buy CD's at shows. Trouble is I'm not going to shows all that much either. Just recently bought a download album from Deke Dickerson, coulda bought the CD to be shipped with the book I also bought, but I wanted the quick access. Next day I was listening to it in ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

The Onyx series really was underrated - we've had people* request them for live recording, just using the inputs to feet those DSub outputs. Parts are getting maybe a little hard to find, they used these weird SIP (single inline package) op-amps in a few spots and those occasionally burn out. *real ...

Re: Reco me some loud cans

Second the recommendation for IEM's. Protect your hearing, don't play with super loud headphones to get over drum leakage!

Re: Some space saver stuff for the studio

Very cool space! Glad you're back "home".

One little niggle about putting excess cable together in a tub - great idea, but don't put any line-lump power supplies in there, those things radiate lots of noise.

Re: pop production

Guess I'll have to check out that Stones record... wasn't ever really a Foo fan.

The pop/disco thing about the Stones is kind of interesting, though - "Miss You" was supposed to be a sop to Mick who really wanted to go disco. But it's got such an interesting vibe, and that bass line... 8)

Re: "always on" talkback

I'm curious if pro musicians are still mostly using headphones in the studio, vs. their own custom-molded IEMs from the concert world. It's a lot easier to pop headphones on and off, for one thing. IEM users are more used to having an ambience/audience mic as part of their feed. Wacky idea - enginee...

Re: SM7db? Wow!

It makes a lot of sense. The classic SM7B isn't really compatible with most common interfaces, in that there's just not enough gain available. Your bog-standard stereo USB interface is designed for modern condensor mics that have a hot output. Like the last thing any manufacturer wants to say is "it...

Re: Actually useful Amazon junk?

Antistatic work gloves, what I call "gummy gloves" - cloth glove dipped in some kind of grippy rubber.

As mentioned in another item, cheap refurbished computers.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Refurbished Windows 10 laptop - 14" screen, only a 260Gb SSD, and from 2018 or so. But only $160! I needed something to run system tuning software (specifically SMAART) and such, the old one was getting wonky. This is a fantastic time to buy refurb computers, though - right on Amazon, lots of choice...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Weird old radio mic, shaped like an ice cream scoop and made mostly out of plastics. Very heavy duty switch inside, though. I got this a while back and only recently got around to cleaning it up and wiring in a working cable. Has a great telephone voice sound to it.

Re: In-ear Monitors (IEMs)

BTW if you're looking for inexpensive generic earbuds, the Shure SE 215 is very good for being the cheap one in the product range. It's what we bundle with our IEM system rentals.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I don't expect Shure preamps would sound bad . The preamps don't sound bad, they're just limited in gain range. As in, there's not actually a proper gain knob, just that front panel mix knob. There's a little switch almost hidden behind the Phoenix mic input that lets you choose line, mic, mic w/ p...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Just picked up a few of these, off Craigslist, they look brand new: Shure SCM 810 8-Channel Automixer https://www.shure.com/en-US/products/mixers/scm810 The market for those dried up when much better sounding automixing (Dan Dugan and the various clones since his patents expired) became ubiquitous ...

Re: In-ear Monitors (IEMs)

I think a lot of professionals just use their live IEMs in the studio also, like why wouldn't you use very high quality custom-fitted devices? I have a pair of the base model Sensaphonics IEMs, custom molded of course. I got them because I'm a live sound guy and once in a while get an IEM monitor mi...
