Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?
FWIW, and on the inexpensive end (as always), I have a Yamaha PM1000 pre racked by someone here, really like it on guitars. And the ISA One is said to be a Neve design - lotsa options and it's wonderful with ribbons, too. No idear how close they are to 1073's. the ISA's are great but I think far aw...

Re: Size Matters!
After some talk at another forum I went with an LG widescreen that fits between my monitor speakers. I put it on an arm, but don't often pull it toward me. I really like it, and I've considered another one, that would be on top set for vertical dual screens, but I'm OK using option+ and going back a...

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?
Unless you're running a studio that is catering to freelance engineers and producers, you probably don't need to have real deal vintage 1073s. As Mike mentioned, I'd rather have things that are less 'particular' on the maintenance field. I had an Aurora GTQ2 for a few years and it was great, but I d...

Re: RIP Charles Kane
This is sad news. I'm so glad he had someone to pass all that knowledge along, who wants to continue the legacy.

Re: The bottom of the snare
I mic the snare bottom in a similar way to how I mic a tom. It's not pointed at, or right under the snares themselves, but pointed at the head a little ways in from the rim. Blend varies. Not unlike T-rex, it's kind of a 'miss it when it's muted' thing than an "OH WOW" sound. “but once I take it awa...

Re: monitors
There's a professor here in town who makes speakers as a hobby. 2 years ago I asked him about making smaller 3-way near fields. The result was a design with a sealed woofer and dipole ribbon mid-range and tweeter. A Dayton Audio DSP/crossover feeds the tri-amped system, The drivers were chosen speci...

Re: widening stereo sources in a mix
Look at the "Stereo" waveform. Is it truly Stereo? Many, and I mean MANY amateur recorders, even pro musicians, record stuff in "Stereo" but with only one mic. There are also DAWs that you set if they record in Stereo or Mono, and the artiste may not know that is happening. Whatever the case, when ...

Re: OH and room drum mic Techniques
If I go spaced it's usually toward the outside of the set, and I drop a mic cable too the floor to make sure then they are off axis for anything. I'm not understanding this. Sorry, late night. you don't want your spaced pair's capsules "looking" directly at any drum or cymbal? That is correct. Cymb...

Re: OH and room drum mic Techniques
I'm mostly an ORTF on an angle bisecting the BD and SD. If I go spaced it's usually toward the outside of the set, and I drop a mic cable too the floor to make sure then they are off axis for anything. I have been thinking about trying a 'close spaced pair' with a slight angle outward. It's somethin...

Re: RIP Chris Garges @cgarges
I bought some monitors from Mitch Easter recently and that rabbit hole brought me back to the TOMB for the first time in several years. An article about Mitch mentioned the news about Chris. I mainly knew him through the forum but one day on a whim, I bid on a Topaz board on eBay and won it. Realiz...

Losing Mark is huge. He was one of my dearest friends. I put a thread on the Creative Recording section that has more details. He had pancreatic cancer that spread to his liver.

Re: RIP Mark Rubel
Thanks, man.
I love that one too. The picture is great, and a total Mark thing.
I once bought him a photo book called "Extraordinary Chickens." I gave it to him at a conference, and later that weekend when we played together, we called the band Mark Rubel and the Extraordinary Chickens.

RIP Mark Rubel
It is with a heavy heart that I inform the community that Mark Rubel passed away yesterday in his home in Nashville. Mark wasn't much of a forums guy, but he was deeply committed to making music, making records, and teaching recording and engineering. Mark spent most of his life in Champaign Illinoi...
