the ADCs in the digi 002 are AKM AK5383, which spec out at 110dB dynamic range (DR). pretty good.

the DACs in the 002 are AKM AK4393, which are the top of the line AKM DACs. 120dB DR.

never peeked inside a roland VS, but at best, they could only be comparable. probably worse.

it looks like there is stuff on the other side of the PCB; mostly likely ICs, as they are small enough.

find out what opamps are in the circuit and check for excessive DC on the input and output pins with a multimeter.

uh yeah, but if there are no fuses in there it wont start. Not saying just replacing the fuse will fix anything. Certainly dont do the stupid guitarist "foil trick"! I have seen a few of these with no fuses/fuse holders just sitting gathering dust. One friend of mine had his fuses holders stolen by...

when i worked at an AV repair shop, we used to just use spit on a Q-Tip on the laser.

sounds gross, but it always fixed the problem.

i have a 2247LE.

it is a nice mic, but if i had to do it over again, i think i would go Pearlman.

Dave was alot nicer on the phone than John was. YMMV.
