Words of wisdom.

Which I'm going to completely ignore.
Nothing I've said so far suggested that I'm worried about acquiring new gear. In fact it is just the opposite...I'm frustrated that I can't get better sound with what I've got.

I always like a little distance between my organ speaker and mic for a little more room. It seems like a little room helps organ mix a little better in a mix. It's tough...whether you close mic or have some distance. Depends on the song and what you need. I've just been micing a deville 4x10 with a...

for our recitals/concerts here, we only use one pair in X/Y. Classical peeps tend to love the omni supposing that the room does sound good. We have had the omni version of the shure 81 (the 83 I think?) and the Avenson omnis. The music dept recordist finally got his dream pair of Joesephsons C somet...

I spent so much time putting together a mix of the title track. I brought my wife in. She liked it so much she cried. Then I bounced it down and took it home to listen on my home system. Thin. Lifeless. Boring. In my experience, this is almost always a room acoustics or a monitoring issue. If it so...

Good stuff. If anyone wants to thrown down on my frustrations, I spill: Like I said before, all my mixes sound pinched and thin. Mostly though I can't get my mixes to translate out of the studio. I'm in an interesting situation. After tracking for a few years out of my home and never mixing there, I...

Oh, and thanks for all the posts/thoughts so far. I really do wish I could have a mentor. That would be sweet.

I'm going to resist the urge to get into specifics about why I suck as a mixing engineer. I could say...well, my mixes sound thin and puny and pinched...but I'm not so interested in trying to fix my problems in this thread as I am interested in hearing others voice their experiences with fear and fr...

What if you just suck?

Anybody here had to face the fact that they just suck at mixing?

I've got no more excuses. Great room. Great gear...and I pretty much suck.

how exactly are the levels screwy? im setting one I just bought up (you can check out my recent post) and had levels coming back from the repro head going weird and there were several things happening. Most had to do with the cards not being seated properly. Also it was really dirty. And im pretty ...

Otari MX5050 repair help

I'm wanting to send stems out from digital to my 5050 and then bounce them back in for final mix. I haven't used the machine in three years. Its been through a move too. I figured it would need some service, so I ran a test first. I had my digital mix all balanced. I sent four stem pairs out my D/A ...

Re: Watertower...

I of course love the magazine... But I really wanted to see the inside of that Water Tower studio... That's EXACTLY what I was thinking when I was reading that article. I'm guessing part of the limitation here is the overall budget of the magazine. I'm assuming everything has to be simplified and s...

Look, all these folks that read Tape Op and decide it's only about certain music styles or think they have ANY FUCKING IDEA the limits of my listening habits are fucking SO FULL OF THEIR OWN BS that I shouldn't even have to comment. I was listening to electronic music when the idea of a polyphonic ...

WTB: fender vibro champ

I've had one that is probably an early 70's version on extended loan. I've got to give it back and I want one for myself.

Anybody want to part with theirs?
