I saw a Quad8 rack with 4 pres just yesterday. I think it was on ebay. I think it was $1500. A killer deal if it's done right. I didn't look too close, but I'm sure you could surf around a bit and find them if they're still available. If they're not there any longer, or not up to par with the rackin...

The instrument in on preamps "should" be equivalent to a DI, but in practice, sometimes a discrete DI into the mic amp section will work better. I believe wirlwind do passive one with a jensen transformer, which you may like. I coudn't agree more. Even a modest countryman or similar DI sounds bette...

Since I just read the rest of this thread I thought I'd clarify my position on bearing edges. You guys are right that there are some drums that the edges are so bad they're un-tunable and therefore unplayable. Those are the kits to walk away from. Comparing that to a fret job on a guitar is not real...

Many good points here. One quick clarification on old Gretsch snares: I was thinking specifically of the '60s 5 1/2" wood snare that's pretty common, usually with some kind of swirly pearl finish on it. I would budget for having the bearing edges redone if you go this route -- Creative Music in Con...

Are you talking about regular carpet padding? The stuff that's maybe an inch thick at best? I'd say that if anyting, it's maybe taking off a very small amount of high-end. Most of the time, this sort of thing just makes a room sound dead and doesn't do much for the overall sound of the room. You nee...

I'm in a fairly new room and just got around to putting up some traps in the past week. I used the 8 lb fibrex in the 4" variety to build the superchunk traps in the corners. They're floor to ceiling and it takes 3 sheets, er one pack of the 4" fibrex to do it. If you purchase the 2" fibrex, you'll ...

Re: New to Board/What Mic's to buy?
i've decided i would like to upgrade to a decent pair of mics to use as overheads/room mics. I'm looking to spend around 2 g's on a decent pair of mics so i want to make sure i get the most for my money. So if anyone would have any suggestions regarding these mics OR any other selection of mics tha...

You say that you do a lot of mobile recording in rooms that are garbage. That pretty much rules out omni. You might get lucky, but overall, omni wouldn't be that useful in this situation. If it were me, I'd look to upgrade my SDC's. The C1000's are not too keen. At the least, get a pair of oktava 01...

I might be in the minority here on the tapeop boards, but I think that even a modest computer setup is better than most of the tape decks you'll find like this. When folks talk about analog and tape, they're not really talking about consumer and pro-sumer machines like these little Teac, Tascam and ...

Totally usable pre and stuff. Again, haven't played with it too much as I've gotten too many new things at once. I'll fight thro...
