I'm 32 years old and I quit my career in IT about 1 1/2 years ago. <snip> In the end, you have to do the right thing for yourself and for your family. You have a much tougher set of circumstances to balance than I do, though. Sure, I made a hell of a lot more money doing IT but in the end it wasn't...

If you're too busy in your freelancing endeavors, it's time to raise your fees? Yes, actually my fees are pretty low for this region and that's one part of my master plan in the new year. We're raising our rates, instituting a minimum billing time of 1 hour (we get nickel-and-dimed with tiny change...

Seems like you have to zen-out for a while. Step outside yourself and ask yourself if not tracking alt-country acts all night in your own studio is really what is bogging you down. Nah, you're totally right. I'm just really burnt out and have been grasping at straws to find a way to save my sanity....

Here's my 2 cents: Do you really have to go at it alone? I'm betting you're burned out not on the type of work, but the freelancing/DIY lifestyle. Hustling for the gigs on your own is a tough lifestyle. Everybody dreams of "being their own boss"- a romantic individualistic notion that is so much a ...

Hey Workshed, I've done pretty much what you are considering, though not entirely out of choice. I had a day-gig designing educational multimedia for a textbook publisher for about 8 years. We bought a house, no kids though. It was deadline-driven stuff, and I regularly worked 60 hour weeks. Fairly...

I'm 34 years old, no kids, rent an apartment, my houseplants need water, etc. ... "Commercial studio" - You used that phrase. Think about that phrase. Think long and hard. Make a pho Excel spreadsheet. Go ahead. Dive in. Yes, I think a big part of my master plan is to transition my business to the ...

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far. I appreciate all of the advice -- even the heavy handed stuff. I want to clear one thing up, and that's that I am not going to do anything to jeopardize my family. I'm probably entirely too responsible and conservative when it comes to financial risk, so I ...

Wanting a career change. Advice?
Little background: I am 35, married, two kids, mortgage, car payments, etc. The whole shootin' match. I've been a graphic designer / web developer for the last 10+ years. I've been running my own business for the last three years. To put it bluntly, I am plain old burnt out on my profession. If I wa...

Help J. Robbins and his kid out
I wasn't sure if this has been posted yet (did a search and didn't find anything) or in which forum to post it, but for those of you who have enjoyed the music and production/engineering of J. Robbins over the years as much as I have (or even those of you with kids) may find this interesting: http:/...

RNC when it's NOT in Super Nice mode can do some pretty brutal stuff. At least I think so. Weird distortion and stuff like that. No one seems to agree with me on this, though. In fact, I sometimes wonder if my RNC is defective and does things no one else's RNC does. It did start smoking once when I...

Thanks for posting the clips and pictures workshed. Sounds good. How high up is the Overhead mic? I don't think I could see it in any of the pictures. I saw the stand and cable, but don't think I saw the mic. Were the OH and side mic the same distance from the snare? Just curious. Thanks! It's abou...

sounds really nice there!! So does the panning change depending on certain things when using this method? I thought it was OH and kick straight up and then the side mic hardpanned all the way left or right depending on perspective? is this what you did? How do you like that vocal mic baffle thing? ...
